Director, Global Trade Compliance

Location: Global | Full-Time

Position Summary

The Director, Global Trade Compliance is responsible for leading Exelixis’ global trade compliance strategy and operations. This role oversees all import and export activities, ensures compliance with international trade regulations, and manages freight forwarders, customs brokers, and global logistics functions. As the organization’s subject matter expert for import/export processes, duty and tariff classifications, FTZ administration, and trade-related compliance, this leader will strengthen and scale the company’s global Trade Compliance Program. The role also includes developing corporate training, implementing compliance standards, and guiding logistics strategies across the business.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the long-term strategic vision for global trade compliance and logistics programs.

  • Monitor emerging regulatory changes and industry developments affecting global trade.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for trade compliance matters across the organization.

  • Create and maintain policies, procedures, and standards for trade compliance and logistics operations.

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs to build a network of internal trade compliance experts.

  • Lead audits, investigations, and internal reviews to ensure adherence to compliance requirements and maintain accurate documentation.

  • Establish and maintain performance scorecards for brokers, freight forwarders, and trade-related activities.

  • Oversee transportation validations and advise on global logistics strategy and critical operational projects.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with senior leaders to ensure alignment with business goals and regulatory expectations.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct oversight of logistics managers, logistics specialists, trade compliance managers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and external consultants.


Education and Experience Requirements

Required Education

  • BS/BA degree in a related field with minimum 13 years of experience, OR

  • MS/MA degree in a related field with minimum 11 years of experience, OR

  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Licensed Customs Broker certification preferred.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Trade Compliance or equivalent regulatory environment.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing teams.

  • Strong background in FDA, DEA, EPA, and USDA import compliance.

  • Experience overseeing logistics functions and external vendor performance.


Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

  • Comprehensive understanding of global trade regulations and compliance requirements.

  • Familiarity with automation tools, trade systems, and system integration processes.

  • Ability to communicate complex trade compliance matters clearly across all organizational levels, including senior leadership.

  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook.

  • Strong critical thinking, project management, and relationship-building skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with high attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks based on corporate strategy, operational needs, and regulatory timelines.

  • Capable of managing complex workstreams in a matrixed environment while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in evaluating trade compliance criteria and developing solutions.


Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based with indoor working conditions.

  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work may be required during critical projects.


Compensation

The base salary range for this role is USD 169,500 – USD 239,500 annually, varying by geographic region, skills, and relevant experience. Compensation may differ based on defined U.S. labor markets and internal equity.
