Role Summary

Under the direction of the Coding Manager, the Surgical Profee Medical Coder ensures accurate coding using ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS based on medical documentation. The coder applies knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, along with compliant coding rules including medical necessity and modifiers. This role also provides guidance on coding trends, denial management, reimbursement, and customer service. Remote work is supported.


Primary Responsibilities

Charge Capture

  • Review paper or electronic charge capture documents for completeness and accuracy.

  • Reconcile collected charges to daily census reports or schedules.

  • Accurately indicate and link ICD-10 diagnosis codes, procedure codes, and modifiers.

  • Prepare daily charge capture documents per Bassett policies.

  • Process pre-billing edits within 2 business days.

  • Ensure charges are posted within 4 days (Outpatient) or 7 days (Inpatient).

Denial Management

  • Process denials daily and ensure codes reflect documentation.

Customer Service

  • Respond to customer service inquiries and escalate recurring issues.

  • Work cooperatively with patients and families when resolving service issues.

Competency & Compliance

  • Attend staff meetings.

  • Maintain coding certification and active membership in local AAPC chapter.

  • Utilize hospital systems and coding tools (Epic EHR, MedAssets CodeCorrect, CodeRyte).

  • Stay updated on coding changes and reimbursement requirements.

  • Implement updates to clinic sheets and charge documents.

  • Follow ethical coding standards (AAPC/AHIMA) and CMS/OIG guidelines.

Coding Review & Education

  • Conduct annual and focused coding reviews.

  • Assist with orientation, skill development, and mentoring of new coders.

  • Provide education to providers based on coding trends.

  • Perform additional duties as requested by supervisor or manager.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

  • Professional coder certification from AHIMA/AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H) maintained annually.

  • 3+ years of experience in Professional Services Surgery Coding (Plastics & Dermatology).

  • 3+ years working with CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • 3+ years experience with coding rules/regulations including medical record documentation, compliance, medical necessity, claims denials, bundling, and charge capture.


Telecommuting Requirements

  • Dedicated work area separated from living areas providing information privacy.

  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure.

  • Location must support high-speed internet approved by UnitedHealth Group.


Physical Requirements

  • Extensive work at a computer station.

  • Hourly pay range: $20.00–$35.72 per hour based on full-time employment.
