Description

United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is proud to be an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every employee feels empowered and valued, regardless of race, ethnicity, abilities, education, religion, gender identity, life experience, sexual orientation, country of origin, or family status. We also provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.

Brief Job Overview

Are you passionate about helping pharmaceutical researchers enhance drug quality? If you have experience in developing analytical methods using quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR), we want to hear from you!

We are looking for a Scientist III to join our Digital and Innovation group. In this role, you will play a crucial part in developing next-generation analytical and digital technologies for pharmaceutical R&D. Your responsibilities will include driving product and application development by leveraging your understanding of qNMR and quantum mechanics (QM) for chemical analysis, creating validated methods, exploring non-targeted analysis via solvent solubility, and applying Life Cycle approaches through QbD principles. This is a fixed-term position for up to 3 years.

With over 200 years of experience, USP works as an independent, scientific nonprofit organization to ensure the quality of medicines, dietary supplements, and foods. Our rigorous science and public quality standards build trust in safe and effective medicines. Join us to make a meaningful contribution to USP’s mission of protecting patient safety and improving global health.

How Will YOU Create Impact at USP?

The purpose of this position is to provide a high-level overview of its critical priorities:

  • Conduct studies to evaluate NMR parameters and their effects on QM-based analysis and qNMR non-target analysis.
  • Develop, optimize, and publish high-quality analytical methods using high-field NMR and qNMR applications, including white papers and journal articles.
  • Acquire high-resolution qNMR spectra and implement structural elucidation for chemical structural information to develop QM spectral analysis models.
  • Collaborate on ongoing studies to enhance the digital NMR spectral database.
  • Provide technical guidance on product development projects to advance qNMR applications within USP.
  • Manage project tasks, create work schedules, and formulate experiment plans.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve method and instrumentation issues while implementing risk-mitigating controls for high data quality.
  • Review and evaluate scientific literature to support the advancement of high-field and benchtop qNMR applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and food industries.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external experts to further USP’s mission of developing public standards.

Who Is USP Looking For?

We seek a candidate who aligns with our mission and demonstrates a commitment to excellence through inclusive practices. You should have the ability to build credibility with stakeholders and possess the following qualifications:

  • Education and Experience: MSc/M. Pharm. with 6-8 years of relevant experience in NMR, qNMR, and quantum mechanics, or a PhD with no prior experience in a scientific discipline with similar focus.
  • We especially welcome applications from individuals with historically marginalized or underrepresented identities. Candidates who meet many, but not all, qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Additional Desired Preferences

While not mandatory, the following preferences would enhance your candidacy:

  • Experience in developing and validating high-quality analytical methods.
  • Hands-on experience with NMR (qNMR, quantum mechanics for qNMR modeling and analysis), HPLC, and related technologies.
  • Ability to plan and conduct rigorous scientific research independently.
  • Strong data evaluation and interpretation skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Capability to multi-task effectively.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving technical problems.
  • Familiarity with good laboratory practices (GLP).
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex scientific ideas to non-scientists.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality work on time.
  • Knowledge of designing and building guidelines for standardizing spectral libraries/databases is a plus.
  • Understanding of good manufacturing practices (GMP) is a plus.

Benefits

USP offers a comprehensive benefits package to support your personal and financial well-being, including company-paid time off, healthcare options, and retirement savings plans.
