Role Summary

The Medical Coder ensures accurate coding using ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS based on medical documentation. They serve as a resource to managers regarding coding trends, charge capture, denial management, reimbursement, and compliance. Remote work is supported.


Primary Responsibilities

Charge Capture

  • Review charge capture documents (electronic or paper) for completeness and accuracy.

  • Reconcile charges to daily census reports or schedules.

  • Accurately link ICD-10 diagnosis codes, procedure codes, and modifiers.

  • Prepare daily charge capture documents according to policies.

  • Process pre-billing edits within 2 business days.

  • Ensure charges are posted within 4 days (Outpatient) or 7 days (Inpatient).

Denial Management

  • Process denials daily within timelines.

  • Ensure procedure and ICD-10 codes reflect documentation.

Customer Service

  • Respond to customer service questions and escalate recurring issues.

  • Work cooperatively with patients and families when resolving issues.

Competencies & Compliance

  • Attend staff meetings and maintain coding certification with active membership in local AAPC chapter.

  • Maintain knowledge of hospital systems and coding tools (Epic, MedAssets CodeCorrect, CodeRyte).

  • Stay updated on coding changes and reimbursement requirements.

  • Implement updates to departmental/site clinic sheets and charge documents.

  • Adhere to ethical coding standards (AAPC/AHIMA) and official CMS/OIG guidelines.

Coding Review & Education

  • Conduct annual and focused coding reviews.

  • Assist in onboarding, mentoring, and skill development of new coders.

  • Provide coding education to providers based on trends.

  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisors or managers.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

  • Professional coder certification from AHIMA/AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H) maintained annually.

  • 3+ years of experience in professional services psychiatry coding.

  • 3+ years working with CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • 3+ years experience with coding rules/regulations including medical necessity, compliance, claims denials, bundling, and charge capture.


Telecommuting Requirements

  • Dedicated work area separated from living areas providing information privacy.

  • Ability to keep sensitive documents secure.

  • Location must support high-speed internet approved by UnitedHealth Group.


Physical Requirements

  • Extensive work at a computer station.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay range: $20.00–$35.72 based on full-time employment.
