Medical Director – Oncology (Utilization Management) | Remote, USA

Compensation / Salary: $238,000 – $357,500 (total cash compensation at target; base + bonus)

Job Summary

Optum is hiring a Medical Director – Oncology (Utilization Management) to lead evidence‑based utilization review and support case and disease management teams to drive optimal, cost‑effective outcomes for oncology populations. As an NCCN guideline expert, you’ll collaborate with treating providers, educate internal clinical teams, analyze clinical/claims/utilization data, and advance enterprise-wide oncology quality and research initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver oncology utilization review determinations grounded in NCCN evidence‑based guidelines

  • Collaborate telephonically with treating providers to address quality gaps, care plan optimization, and cost stewardship

  • Serve as subject matter expert for oncology policies, processes, and clinical governance

  • Educate and mentor oncology nurses/clinical teams; act as a thought leader with external societies/stakeholders

  • Analyze quality, claims, EMR, and utilization data to identify improvement opportunities

  • Partner with business and operations leaders on clinical quality, research, and enterprise initiatives

  • Participate in rotational holiday and call coverage


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • MD or DO with an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license (ability to obtain additional state licenses as needed)

  • Board Certified in Oncology (ABMS or AOBMS)

  • 5+ years of clinical practice experience (inclusive of Medical Oncology)

  • Demonstrated expertise with NCCN guidelines

  • Proven achievements across utilization management, case/disease management, quality management, peer review, or product development

  • Comfortable working fully remote and adhering to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Managed care / payer and quality management experience
