Role Overview

The Head of Medical Affairs & Scientific Affairs will lead all medical and scientific functions supporting Abbott’s Infectious Disease (ID) business unit. Reporting directly to the Business Unit President, this senior leadership role drives innovation strategy, shapes the R&D pipeline and strengthens global commercial success. The role requires deep expertise in infectious disease, strong scientific leadership and an ability to collaborate across global markets and functions including Marketing, Research, Assay Development, Regulatory, Commercial and external regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Medical and Scientific Leadership

  • Lead and integrate the Medical Affairs and Scientific Affairs functions for the Infectious Disease business.

  • Develop global medical and scientific strategies supporting product innovation, lifecycle management and commercial objectives.

  • Assess emerging and unmet medical needs across global markets and identify opportunities for product improvements, innovative technologies and disruptive diagnostics.

  • Contribute to shaping the R&D roadmap and defining pipeline priorities for future business growth.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Representation

  • Serve as Abbott’s primary medical representative to regulatory agencies, professional organizations and clinical stakeholders.

  • Partner with Global Marketing, Assay Development, Research, Regulatory and Commercial functions to support medical alignment and product positioning.

  • Provide expert medical and scientific support during customer engagements and professional education initiatives.

Medical Governance and Compliance

  • Review and approve medical platform documents, Health Hazard Assessments, medical opinions and scientific content.

  • Oversee post-market surveillance activities and provide strategic insight into product safety and performance.

  • Ensure compliance with Office of Ethics and Compliance guidelines across all medical and scientific operations.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead a high-performing team of medical and scientific directors.

  • Foster a culture of scientific excellence, innovation, strategic thinking and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Mentor and develop team members to build long-term organizational capabilities.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • MD degree with clinical expertise in infectious disease.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of medical and clinical experience.

  • At least 5 years of experience in the diagnostics or biotechnology industry.

  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements for IVDs and biologics.

  • Proven track record as a respected infectious disease expert or KOL with strong publication history.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large teams, drive strategic initiatives and manage complex global programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in global markets, particularly in developed regions.


Compensation

Base salary range: $188,700 – $377,300.
Compensation may vary by location.
