Abbott’s Columbus, OH facility is currently recruiting for a Senior Medical Safety Analyst within Research & Development.

Position Overview

The Senior Medical Safety Analyst serves as an experienced professional within Medical Safety and Surveillance (MSS). The role independently manages the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of safety-related information involving chemical contaminants, microorganisms, allergens, and other risk factors. This position provides advanced medical and toxicological support for global innovation and food safety programs.

Key Responsibilities

Medical and Scientific Risk Assessment

  • Provide expert consultation on medical implications of allergen-related and microbiological events.

  • Conduct advanced toxicological and medical risk assessments for ingredients and finished products using established health-based guidance (EFSA, JECFA, EPA, ATSDR, Codex, etc.).

  • Participate in Materials of Interest programs and support ingredient and product safety assessments.

Cross-Functional Safety Leadership

  • Represent Medical Safety and Surveillance as a subject matter expert across cross-functional food safety teams.

  • Influence risk-management decisions by integrating scientific, regulatory, and toxicological insights.

Research and Data Interpretation

  • Independently research, analyze, and synthesize complex medical, toxicological, and safety data.

  • Prepare comprehensive medical safety assessments addressing varied food-safety considerations.

  • Deliver written and verbal reports to internal and external stakeholders with clarity and precision.

Continuous Improvement and Compliance

  • Stay informed on evolving scientific literature, global regulatory updates, and health-based guidance.

  • Communicate emerging safety implications proactively to management.

  • Develop and refine medical safety templates, tools, and processes to improve MSS efficiency.

  • Perform additional duties and support projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health or food science field (toxicology, food science, dietetics, human nutrition, or related discipline).

  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant industry experience in toxicology, food safety, or medical risk assessment.

  • Strong foundational understanding of toxicological principles and risk-assessment frameworks.

  • Proven ability to communicate complex scientific data to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Higher education may substitute for years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent research/industry experience.

  • Practical experience applying toxicology and food-safety principles in a corporate or scientific environment.

  • Knowledge of nutritional product safety and ingredient-related toxicants.

  • Familiarity with regulatory and international guidance frameworks (EFSA, JECFA, EPA, ATSDR, Codex, NAM, etc.).

Additional Details

  • This is a full-time onsite position based in Columbus, Ohio. Remote work is not available.

  • Base Pay Range: $75,300 – $150,700 (location-based variations may apply).
