Role Overview

Abbott is seeking a Medical Review Officer (MRO) for its Toxicology Business Unit within the Abbott Rapid Diagnostics division, based in Kansas City, Missouri. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of workplace drug-testing review processes. The MRO evaluates positive and invalid test results, verifies legitimate medical explanations, and ensures adherence to federal and DOT regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Drug Testing Review and Compliance

  • Interpret and report drug test results for DOT, federal, and non-DOT clients following all regulatory requirements and internal SOPs.

  • Review laboratory documentation for accuracy and identify potential errors or inconsistencies.

  • Conduct detailed telephonic interviews with donors to determine legitimate medical explanations for non-negative results.

  • Apply clinical judgment, physician experience, and MRO expertise to determine final drug test outcomes.

Operational and Regulatory Accountability

  • Uphold DOT-regulated standards across all drug-test reviews to ensure safety and compliance.

  • Maintain complete and audit-ready MRO records.

  • Stay current with federal and DOT laws, regulations, and state-specific requirements.

  • Provide feedback to laboratories, collection sites, and Workplace Solutions clients when performance issues arise.

Client and Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in MRO services across Workplace Solutions’ client base.

  • Represent Abbott’s MRO leadership team in client-facing interactions.

  • Consult with federal agency representatives as needed to support case reviews and regulatory inquiries.

Process Improvement and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with MRO staff and leadership to maintain the integrity of the medical review process.

  • Contribute to process-improvement initiatives and annual departmental goals.

  • Ensure full adherence to Abbott Rapid Diagnostics Quality policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).

  • Current Medical Review Officer certification (AAMRO or MROCC).

  • Minimum 5+ years of clinical practice experience, preferably within occupational health settings.

  • Active license to practice medicine in the United States.

  • Advanced understanding of DOT/FMCSA medical examination regulations and guidelines.

  • Strong knowledge of DOT requirements for MROs and related federal regulations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain composure and communicate effectively with diverse individuals.

  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to work with internal digital systems.

  • Proven collaboration, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to provide recommendations regarding operational improvements.

Compensation

Base Pay Range: $147,300 – $294,700
