Role Purpose

The Director, Animal Medicine and Welfare provides leadership and oversight for the Animal Care and Use program at the Ethicon Endo Surgery animal facility. This role designs, plans, and implements best practice SOPs to support reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal models. The Director serves as a key veterinary leader ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and drives sector-wide animal welfare policy adherence.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Direct individual contributors in a matrix organization with focus on career development, coaching, and feedback.

  • Lead and participate in cross-departmental teams influencing animal medicine and research strategies.

  • Serve as veterinary subject matter expert and lead member of the MedTech Global Animal Care & Use Council.

Operational Strategy & Compliance

  • Establish operational strategy for vivarium ensuring compliance with regulatory, safety, SOP, and inspection requirements.

  • Serve as Attending Veterinarian responsible for veterinary care adequacy and animal well-being.

  • Direct ongoing assessment of animal health, pre/post-operative care, medical records review, and morbidity/mortality monitoring.

Regulatory & Advisory Roles

  • Active voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

  • Participate in IACUC, AAALAC, and USDA site visits and inspections.

  • Serve as primary spokesperson and advocate for Animal Welfare within the organization.

  • Act as Controlled Substance Officer ensuring DEA compliance.

Operational Management

  • Manage team budgets, performance, compliance, workforce planning, and succession plans.

  • Advise on preventive maintenance scheduling for vivarium and develop policies on animal care, use, health, and sanitation.

  • Develop and implement procedures for research animal acquisition and care.

  • Drive project delivery impacting business results, proactively identifying and resolving issues.


Education & Experience

Education

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD)

  • Licensure in the state of Ohio

  • Board Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)

  • USDA Accredited Veterinarian, Category 2

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in animal care and welfare in industry or contract research organization (CRO) settings.

  • Extensive knowledge of animal welfare and care regulations.


Travel & On-Call Requirements

  • Up to 30% travel.

  • On-call availability during weekends and holidays.
