About the Role

Syneos Health is seeking an accomplished Therapeutic Area Head – Cardio Metabolic and Intensive Care to provide strategic, scientific, and operational leadership across a global portfolio of complex clinical development programs. This senior executive role oversees studies spanning Cardiology, Metabolic Disorders, and Intensive Care, ensuring delivery excellence, financial performance, innovation, and long-term client partnerships.

As a key member of the Global Project Management Leadership Team, this leader will shape therapeutic delivery strategy, ensure scientific rigor, and strengthen Syneos Health’s position as a global leader in Cardio Metabolic and Critical Care research.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Organizational Leadership

  • Define and execute the global delivery strategy for Cardio Metabolic and Intensive Care programs, aligning clinical execution with corporate objectives and client expectations.

  • Anticipate emerging scientific, regulatory, and market trends to position Syneos Health as the preferred CRO partner in these therapeutic areas.

  • Drive operational excellence, scalability, and modernization across clinical development platforms.

  • Partner with senior enterprise leaders to align delivery models with long-term growth priorities.

Scientific Authority & External Influence

  • Maintain deep scientific expertise across cardiovascular, metabolic, and intensive care indications.

  • Serve as a trusted scientific and strategic advisor to client C-suite leaders, regulatory bodies, and industry partners.

  • Represent Syneos Health at global scientific and industry forums, enhancing credibility and thought leadership.

  • Integrate evidence-based insights to shape client development strategies and partnerships.

Therapeutic Portfolio Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight across all phases of Cardio Metabolic and Intensive Care clinical programs.

  • Ensure delivery performance, proactive risk management, and consistent client satisfaction.

  • Establish governance frameworks for performance tracking, escalation management, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operational, scientific, quality, and technology leaders to drive innovation in clinical delivery.

Executive Client Management & Business Development

  • Act as senior executive sponsor for strategic Cardio Metabolic and Intensive Care clients.

  • Support business development initiatives, including bid defenses, RFIs, and strategic growth engagements.

  • Partner with Business Development and functional leaders to expand portfolio value and long-term partnerships.

  • Coach senior leaders to deliver high-impact client presentations and engagements.

Financial & Operational Accountability

  • Own financial performance of the therapeutic area, including forecasting, budgeting, and profitability.

  • Optimize resource utilization and strengthen portfolio economics through data-driven decision making.

  • Partner with Finance and Operations to ensure sustainable cost structures and scalable growth models.

Talent Development & Culture

  • Lead, mentor, and develop global leadership teams (VP and below), fostering accountability and high performance.

  • Build succession pipelines and future leadership capabilities within the therapeutic area.

  • Promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement across global teams.

Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure compliance with ICH/GCP, regulatory requirements, and internal quality systems.

  • Support inspection readiness and consistent quality execution across global programs.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, scalability, and client satisfaction.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, or a related discipline (MS, PharmD, MD, or equivalent required; PhD preferred).

  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in clinical research, clinical operations, or project management within CRO, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology organizations.

  • Extensive leadership experience overseeing complex clinical development programs in cardiology, metabolic disorders, and/or intensive care.

  • Proven ability to manage large, global portfolios and lead multi-layered executive teams.

  • Strong business and financial acumen, including P&L ownership, budgeting, and forecasting.

  • In-depth knowledge of drug development, global regulatory requirements, and GCP/ICH guidelines.

  • Exceptional executive presence with demonstrated ability to influence C-suite stakeholders and senior clients.

  • Track record of driving innovation, transformation, and operational excellence at scale.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 30–35%.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: USD 245,600 – 454,300 (commensurate with experience and qualifications).
