About the Role

Syneos Health is seeking a seasoned Therapeutic Area Head – General Medicine to provide strategic, scientific, and operational leadership across a global portfolio spanning Infectious Disease, Vaccines, Respiratory, Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT), and select Medical Device & Diagnostics (MD&D) programs. This executive role is pivotal in advancing clinical delivery excellence, shaping therapeutic strategy, modernizing operational capabilities, and driving high-value growth aligned with corporate goals.

As a senior member of the Global Project Management Leadership Team, the Therapeutic Area Head will serve as a scientific authority, operational strategist, and key partner to clients, industry stakeholders, and internal teams, ensuring Syneos Health remains the partner of choice in General Medicine research.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute the strategic vision for General Medicine delivery, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities and global growth strategies.

  • Transform go-to-market strategies, including modernization of global capabilities, TCOE-based collateral, and conference engagement.

  • Monitor emerging scientific, regulatory, and competitive trends to position Syneos Health as a preferred partner.

  • Collaborate with senior executives to establish scalable, cohesive operational models supporting portfolio growth.

Scientific Authority & External Influence

  • Maintain deep scientific expertise across infectious disease, immunology, respiratory medicine, vaccines, advanced therapies, and MD&D.

  • Serve as a recognized advisor to senior clients, regulatory agencies, and external partners.

  • Represent Syneos Health at international scientific forums, enhancing thought leadership and global visibility.

  • Integrate scientific, commercial, and development insights to shape client strategies.

Therapeutic Portfolio Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight for all General Medicine projects across phases I–IV, ensuring operational excellence, risk mitigation, and client satisfaction.

  • Guide portfolio prioritization and resource alignment to support growth trajectories in vaccines, ID, respiratory innovation, CGT, and MD&D.

  • Establish governance to monitor delivery performance and drive continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with operational and scientific teams to modernize capabilities, including analytics, AI-enabled risk management, and evidence-based frameworks.

Executive Client Management & Business Development

  • Serve as senior liaison for strategic General Medicine clients.

  • Support business development initiatives, including proposals, bid defenses, and strategic partnerships.

  • Build long-term client relationships reinforcing Syneos Health’s differentiated scientific and operational capabilities.

Financial & Operational Leadership

  • Maintain accountability for financial performance, including forecasting, profitability, and resource optimization.

  • Drive operational efficiency, predictability, and data-driven decision making.

  • Partner with Finance and Operations to ensure scalable business models supporting global growth.

Organizational Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead and mentor global leadership teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and high performance.

  • Develop succession pipelines for scientific, operational, and executive roles.

  • Promote an inclusive culture that drives innovation across therapeutic and geographic lines.

Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure compliance with ICH/GCP, regulatory standards, and internal quality systems.

  • Lead initiatives to modernize General Medicine capabilities and optimize operational infrastructure.

  • Drive continuous improvement to enhance delivery scalability, client satisfaction, and operational resilience.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, or related scientific discipline (MS, PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent).

  • 15+ years of experience in clinical research, project management, or clinical operations within CRO, pharmaceutical, or biotech settings.

  • Proven executive leadership in managing complex clinical development programs in infectious disease, vaccines, respiratory, or advanced therapies; experience in MD&D preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, global portfolios and multi-layered leadership teams.

  • Strong business acumen with experience in forecasting, financial management, and therapeutic growth strategy.

  • Expertise in drug development, global regulatory expectations, and evolving scientific landscapes.

  • Exceptional executive presence with proven ability to influence C-suite stakeholders, clients, and internal leaders.

  • Track record of driving innovation, transformation, and modernization within clinical operations.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 30–35%.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $245,600 – $454,300 (USD), dependent on experience and qualifications.
