Role Overview

The Therapeutic Area Head – General Medicine is a senior executive leadership role responsible for providing strategic, scientific, and operational oversight across a global General Medicine portfolio. This portfolio includes Infectious Disease, Vaccines, Respiratory, Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT), and selected Medical Device and Diagnostics (MD&D) programs.

Following the strategic separation of Cardiometabolic and Intensive Care, this role ensures focused leadership across therapeutic areas with the greatest growth potential and strategic importance to Syneos Health. As a key member of the Global Project Management Leadership Team, the role drives delivery excellence, portfolio expansion, and long-term value creation while positioning Syneos Health as a preferred partner in General Medicine clinical research.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Therapeutic Leadership

  • Define and execute the global strategy for General Medicine clinical delivery, aligned with corporate objectives and long-range growth plans.

  • Lead the evolution of go-to-market and delivery models, including modernization of Therapeutic Center of Excellence (TCOE) capabilities and global engagement strategies.

  • Monitor emerging scientific, regulatory, and competitive trends across infectious disease, vaccines, respiratory medicine, CGT, and MD&D to strengthen market positioning.

  • Partner with senior enterprise leaders to ensure scalable, efficient, and future-ready operating models.

Scientific Authority and External Engagement

  • Maintain deep scientific expertise across General Medicine therapeutic domains, including immunology, respiratory medicine, vaccines, and advanced therapies.

  • Serve as a trusted scientific and strategic advisor to senior clients, regulators, and industry stakeholders.

  • Represent Syneos Health at global scientific forums, conferences, and industry associations to enhance thought leadership and brand credibility.

  • Support client strategy development by integrating scientific evidence, commercial insights, and global regulatory considerations.

Global Portfolio Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of General Medicine clinical programs across Phases I–IV, ensuring delivery excellence, quality, and client satisfaction.

  • Guide portfolio prioritization and resource allocation to support global growth initiatives across Europe, APAC, and other key regions.

  • Establish governance frameworks to track performance, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement across global delivery teams.

  • Collaborate with operations, data science, and technology leaders to modernize delivery through analytics, AI-enabled risk management, and evidence-based decision-making.

Client Leadership and Business Growth

  • Act as the senior executive sponsor for strategic General Medicine clients.

  • Partner with Business Development, Medical Affairs, and Operations to identify growth opportunities and strengthen client value propositions.

  • Support high-impact client engagements, including bid defenses, RFIs, and strategic partnerships.

  • Build and sustain long-term client relationships grounded in scientific credibility and operational excellence.

Financial and Operational Accountability

  • Own full financial accountability for the General Medicine portfolio, including forecasting, profitability, and resource optimization.

  • Drive operational efficiency and predictability through data-driven performance management.

  • Partner with Finance and Operations to ensure scalable business models that support sustained global growth.

Leadership, Talent, and Culture

  • Lead and mentor a global leadership team (Vice President level and below), fostering a high-performance, inclusive culture.

  • Develop talent pipelines and succession plans for future scientific and operational leaders.

  • Promote collaboration, accountability, and innovation across therapeutic and geographic boundaries.

Quality and Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to ICH/GCP guidelines, global regulatory requirements, and internal quality standards.

  • Partner with Quality leadership to maintain inspection readiness and consistent delivery quality.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance scalability, resilience, and client satisfaction.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Advanced degree required (MS, PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent) in Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in clinical research, clinical operations, or project management within a CRO, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology organization.

  • Proven leadership experience overseeing complex global clinical development programs in infectious disease, vaccines, respiratory medicine, or advanced therapies; MD&D experience is advantageous.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, multi-regional portfolios and senior leadership teams.

  • Strong business acumen with experience in financial forecasting, portfolio management, and growth strategy.

  • Expert knowledge of drug development processes, GCP/ICH standards, and global regulatory environments.

  • Exceptional executive presence with the ability to influence C-suite stakeholders and senior clients.

  • Willingness to travel internationally as required (approximately 30–35%).

Compensation and Benefits

Syneos Health offers a competitive executive compensation package, including base salary, performance-based incentives, and comprehensive benefits. Salary range for this role is USD 245,600 – 454,300, with final compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
