About the Role

Optum is seeking an experienced Supervisor – Coding to lead, manage, and optimize medical coding operations within a high-performance healthcare environment. This role is responsible for overseeing coding teams, ensuring compliance, maintaining quality standards, and driving operational excellence. As part of a global healthcare technology organization, you will contribute to improving patient outcomes and advancing clinical accuracy.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding guidelines, billing regulations, and industry updates.

  • Manage team KPIs such as productivity, quality, turnaround time, attendance, and attrition.

  • Apply strong analytical and logical skills for quick, accurate decision-making.

  • Oversee personnel performance, team discipline, and operational workflow for assigned projects.

  • Provide leadership, expertise, and process guidance within the assigned functional areas.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders and client interactions.

  • Analyze periodic operational reports and performance metrics for continuous improvement.

  • Evaluate coding practices and support quality initiatives that enhance accuracy and efficiency.

  • Support internal audit activities and ensure adherence to compliance standards.

  • Create and maintain a positive work environment that encourages teamwork, creativity, and high morale.

  • Guide teams in resolving issues, setting priorities, and achieving operational targets.

  • Assist senior management in planning, process reviews, and operational modifications.

  • Develop and implement employee retention strategies; effectively manage attrition.

  • Prepare annual business plans, including budgeting and resource planning.

  • Handle conflict resolution and manage critical operational situations proactively.

  • Provide regular coaching, performance feedback, and structured development sessions for team members.

  • Comply with organizational policies, shift requirements, and operational flexibility needs.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences, Allied Medicine, or related fields (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Pharmacy, Dental, Nursing).

  • Certified Medical Coder (AAPC or AHIMA): CCS, CPC, CPC-H, or CCS-P.

  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

  • Minimum 10+ years of medical coding experience, with at least 3+ years in a Team Lead or supervisory role.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement methodologies and coding compliance.

  • Experience in managing large teams and enabling team performance.

  • Proficiency in operational workflows and organizational processes.

  • Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.

  • Ability to coordinate with SMEs, auditors, and trainers to identify skill gaps and training needs.

  • Experience in coaching individuals, monitoring performance, and improving weak areas.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to drive employee engagement and customer satisfaction.
