Job Overview

Optum, a global healthcare organization and part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking an experienced Assistant Manager – Medical Coding Operations to lead and manage high-performing coding teams within medical and clinical operations. This role is responsible for operational excellence, client engagement, compliance adherence, and people management while driving productivity, quality, and turnaround time (TAT) metrics.

The position plays a strategic role in strengthening operational efficiency, improving team performance, and ensuring regulatory compliance in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

Operational & Performance Management

  • Oversee end-to-end operations for assigned medical coding projects, ensuring achievement of KPIs including productivity, quality, TAT, attendance, and attrition.

  • Review and analyze operational reports, dashboards, and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.

  • Evaluate and enhance operational practices, workflows, and procedures to improve efficiency and compliance.

  • Ensure quick turnaround of deliverables through data-driven and analytical decision-making.

Leadership & People Management

  • Manage overall team performance, discipline, engagement, and development across assigned projects.

  • Provide regular performance feedback through structured coaching, mentoring, and one-on-one sessions.

  • Identify skill gaps, training needs, and performance outliers in collaboration with SMEs, auditors, and trainers.

  • Develop and implement retention strategies to manage attrition and strengthen workforce stability.

  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-morale work environment that promotes teamwork and accountability.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for client communication and relationship management.

  • Manage internal stakeholder relationships across functions to ensure seamless delivery and issue resolution.

  • Negotiate solutions, resolve conflicts, and proactively manage critical operational situations.

Compliance, Quality & Audit Support

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding, billing regulations, and reimbursement methodologies.

  • Support internal and external audits, ensuring full compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

  • Contribute to quality initiatives focused on process optimization and risk mitigation.

Strategic & Business Support

  • Assist senior management in operational planning, implementation, and enhancement of systems and procedures.

  • Support preparation of annual business plans, including operating budgets and resource planning.

  • Ensure adherence to company policies, employment terms, and evolving business directives.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Life Sciences or Allied Health disciplines, including but not limited to:

    • BHMS, BAMS, BPT

    • Nursing

    • Pharmacy

    • Dental Sciences

  • Certified Medical Coder with AAPC or AHIMA credentials (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P).

  • Minimum 8 years of medical coding experience, including at least 2 years in a Team Lead or supervisory role.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

  • Proficiency in healthcare reimbursement methodologies and coding guidelines.

  • Proven ability to manage, motivate, and scale high-performing teams.

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated capability in employee engagement and customer satisfaction management.

  • Ability to monitor daily operations, attendance, performance trends, and compliance metrics.

  • Experience providing targeted coaching and educational interventions to improve performance outcomes.
