Position Overview

The Assistant Manager – IP DRG is responsible for leading inpatient medical coding operations, managing team performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing client engagement. The role requires deep expertise in ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, DRG assignment, healthcare reimbursement methodologies, and operational leadership.

This position combines technical coding knowledge with team management, stakeholder communication, audit support, and strategic operational planning.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Performance Management

  • Oversee day-to-day IP DRG coding operations across assigned projects.

  • Monitor and manage KPIs including productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.

  • Provide leadership, direction, and performance oversight to coding teams.

  • Conduct regular one-on-one coaching, performance reviews, and feedback sessions.

  • Identify performance gaps and implement corrective action plans.

  • Develop and execute retention strategies to manage attrition effectively.

Coding Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Maintain updated knowledge of coding guidelines, billing requirements, and regulatory changes.

  • Ensure compliance with AAPC, AHIMA, CMS, and client-specific coding standards.

  • Support internal and external audit processes and ensure adherence to compliance parameters.

  • Collaborate with SMEs, auditors, and trainers to identify and address training needs.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for client interactions and communications.

  • Manage internal stakeholder relationships across quality, training, and operations teams.

  • Review operational reports, analyze metrics, and present insights to senior leadership and clients.

  • Negotiate solutions, resolve conflicts, and proactively address critical operational issues.

Strategic & Business Planning

  • Contribute to annual business planning, including operational budgeting.

  • Evaluate operational workflows and implement process improvement initiatives.

  • Provide strategic input to senior management regarding system enhancements and workflow optimization.

  • Foster a positive team culture focused on engagement, quality, and collaboration.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences or Allied Health Sciences, including:

    • BHMS

    • BAMS

    • BPT

    • Dental Graduates

    • Pharmacy

    • Nursing

    • Other related healthcare disciplines

  • Certified Medical Coder with credentials such as:

    • AAPC (CPC, CPC-H)

    • AHIMA (CCS, CCS-P)

  • Minimum 8+ years of inpatient medical coding experience.

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience as a Team Lead or in a supervisory role within IP DRG coding operations.

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG methodologies.

  • Thorough understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

  • Proficiency in healthcare reimbursement methodologies and payer systems.

  • Knowledge of organizational workflow structures and healthcare operational procedures.
