Position Overview:
Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Senior Director, Medical Affairs for the OTTAVA Surgical Robotics platform. This role is based in Santa Clara, CA, and will be instrumental in co-leading the development and execution of innovative surgical robotics systems. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional blend of medical expertise, technological insight, and leadership capability within a multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Vision:

  • Co-develop and articulate strategic plans for integrating MIS/Surgical Robotics into healthcare delivery systems.

  • Monitor evolving trends in robotic surgery and adjust divisional strategies accordingly.

Team Management and Development:

  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of 5–10 professionals (clinical engineers, MSLs, preclinical operations staff).

  • Foster a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous learning.

Clinical Research and Innovation:

  • Drive and supervise full-cycle clinical research initiatives.

  • Partner with cross-functional medical teams to generate clinical evidence supporting product development and approval.

  • Evaluate scientific literature and competitive landscapes for strategic insights.

Regulatory Compliance and Ethical Standards:

  • Ensure alignment with FDA and global regulatory requirements.

  • Support regulatory document preparation and ethical oversight in all medical affairs activities.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:

  • Represent Johnson & Johnson at global conferences and industry events.

  • Communicate scientific strategy to internal stakeholders and external partners including regulatory bodies and clinicians.

Quality Assurance and Patient Safety:

  • Oversee product quality and safety through robust control and monitoring systems.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Analyze clinical data to support strategic decision-making.

  • Deliver regular performance updates and key findings to senior leadership.

Collaboration with R&D and Marketing Teams:

  • Align product development with clinical and technological insights.

  • Support marketing efforts with accurate and science-backed messaging.

  • Provide full lifecycle support for medical affairs activities (e.g., copy reviews, scientific queries, clinical evaluation inputs).

Budget Management and Resource Allocation:

  • Manage divisional budget with a focus on innovation and cost-efficiency.

  • Lead evaluation activities related to business development opportunities.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, or MB degree.

  • Minimum 15 years post-licensure experience including residency, clinical practice, and/or research.

  • Board Certification (or equivalent) in a surgical specialty strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership in medical affairs, clinical development, or medical device research roles.

  • Minimum two years of experience in surgical robotics.

  • Minimum five years of people/organizational leadership within a matrixed structure.

  • Familiarity with minimally invasive and robotic surgery preferred.

  • Business experience in regulated environments desirable.

  • Willingness to travel up to 30% domestically and internationally.

Compensation Range:

  • Base Pay: $193,000–$333,500

  • California Bay Area Range: $238,000–$382,950
