Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Medical Director, Medical Affairs, Orthopedics (Sports / Joints) to join our MedTech division. This position will be based in West Chester, PA or Raynham, MA for the Sports platform, or in Palm Beach Gardens, FL for the Joints platform.

Our Orthopedics team is pioneering next-generation, personalized treatments that keep over 6 million people moving annually. We develop cutting-edge solutions across joint reconstruction, trauma, extremities, spine, and digital surgery.

The Medical Director will provide strategic medical affairs leadership, support product development and commercialization, and serve as the physician expert across cross-functional teams. This role will influence R&D, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory, and HEMA functions to optimize patient care outcomes and support innovation.


Key Responsibilities:

Internal Process Support:

  • Collaborate with R&D, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory, HEMA, and Marketing to shape product development and launch strategies.

  • Contribute medical insights to concept testing, prototype evaluation, and risk management.

  • Evaluate device performance, safety, and risk-benefit profiles.

  • Partner with Medical Safety and Post-Market Surveillance to analyze signals and trends.

  • Support regulatory audits and inspections.

  • Act as medical consultant for escalations and internal expertise across functions.

Life Cycle Management:

  • Lead medical support for product labeling updates and technical documentation.

  • Respond to Medical Information Requests and review copy approvals.

  • Support literature analysis and Clinical Evaluation Reports (CER).

  • Provide input on risk evaluation documents (PRE/PRA).

Insight & Business Development:

  • Analyze data from KOLs, societies, literature, and digital platforms to identify unmet needs.

  • Inform business development strategies and product positioning.

  • Validate Target Product Profiles (TPPs) in collaboration with global Medical Affairs.

  • Guide innovation with deep clinical insights across multidisciplinary teams.

Evidence Generation:

  • Collaborate on evidence generation strategies for regulatory approvals and post-marketing.

  • Review clinical study reports and scientific publications for accuracy and impact.


Required Qualifications:

  • MD or equivalent with US board certification preferred.

  • Completion of accredited orthopedic surgery residency plus 1-year fellowship in joint arthroplasty, spine surgery, or sports medicine.

  • Minimum 10 years of surgical experience post-licensure in clinical practice, research, or relevant field.

  • Experience in medical affairs, clinical development, or medical device industry preferred.

  • In-depth understanding of clinical risk-benefit assessment and regulatory standards.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and partnership-building skills.

  • Travel: Up to 15% (Domestic & International)


Compensation & Benefits:

Anticipated base pay range: $160,000 to $276,000
