As a Medical Coder – Emergency Department (ED), you’ll play a critical role in ensuring coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and timely claim processing for emergency department services. This position offers an opportunity to grow professionally in a fast-paced, compliance-focused environment.
We are looking for a certified and detail-oriented ED Medical Coder to accurately code Emergency Department encounters. The role involves analyzing medical documentation, assigning the correct codes (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS), and collaborating with clinical teams to ensure accurate and compliant coding practices.
Review and analyze emergency department medical records to extract relevant information such as:
Diagnoses
Procedures
Services rendered
Assign accurate and appropriate codes using:
ICD-10-CM
CPT
HCPCS
Other applicable code sets
Adhere to:
Official Coding Guidelines
Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs)
Payer-specific requirements
Ensure compliance with standards related to:
ICD-10
CPT
HCPCS
ED-specific billing and documentation policies
Work closely with:
Physicians
Healthcare providers
Clinical documentation teams
Clarify documentation and obtain additional information when required for coding accuracy.
Participate in:
Internal and external audits
Coding accuracy reviews
Perform quality checks and ensure all coded data meets compliance standards.
Identify and resolve coding errors, discrepancies, or incomplete documentation.
Stay current on:
Changes in coding regulations and payer guidelines
Emergency medicine coding updates
Attend training sessions, conferences, and internal workshops to enhance skills and stay compliant.
Must hold one of the following certifications:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P)
Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) (optional)
In-depth knowledge of:
ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS
Emergency Department workflows and common diagnoses
Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer billing practices
Familiarity with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and coding software tools
Strong analytical and detail-oriented mindset
Excellent understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Work in a compliance-driven, high-performance coding team
