Job Overview

Cognizant is seeking an experienced Inpatient Medical Coder to join our remote healthcare team. In this role, you will review and analyze hospital inpatient records, assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes, and ensure compliance with regulatory and payer guidelines. This position supports high-quality coding operations, contributing to accurate reimbursement and optimized revenue cycle management for healthcare providers.

This remote role requires candidates to be CCS (AHIMA) certified, with prior experience in hospital-based inpatient coding, and familiarity with EPIC or 3M Encoder systems.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation to assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient hospital encounters.

  • Communicate with physicians to clarify diagnoses and procedures using the query process.

  • Maintain a minimum accuracy rate of 98% while achieving productivity standards of 16–24 encounters per day.

  • Utilize electronic encoder applications to ensure coding compliance with hospital and payer policies.

  • Prepare reports and complete additional documentation as requested by management.

  • Apply knowledge of federal, state, and payer regulations to coding assignments.

  • Support DRG grouping and reimbursement accuracy using standard methodologies.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and work independently to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 2–5 years in hospital-based inpatient coding.

  • Certifications: CCS (AHIMA); CPC or CIC (AAPC) preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, DRG reimbursement, and trauma coding (Level 1).

  • Proficiency with EPIC and 3M Encoder systems.

  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple coding projects with accuracy and timeliness.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).


Preferred Skills

  • Prior experience in high-volume inpatient coding environments.

  • Advanced understanding of DRG reimbursement methodologies and grouping.

  • Academic/university-level inpatient case exposure.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $27 – $37 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
