Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Medical Coder – Surgery with proven expertise in coding complex surgical cases within the US healthcare system. This role is ideal for professionals experienced in Orthopedic or Cardiothoracic/Vascular surgery coding, with the ability to independently code operative reports while ensuring compliance with CMS regulations and payer-specific guidelines. The position plays a critical role in driving clean claim submissions, minimizing denials, and supporting efficient revenue cycle outcomes, including Same Day Surgery (SDS) and ambulatory cases.

Experience Required
Minimum 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in surgical coding from scratch within US healthcare settings

Mandatory Requirements
CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification is required
Strong expertise in CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS coding systems, modifiers, NCCI edits, and CMS guidelines
Proven experience in handling complex surgical claims with high accuracy and minimal denials
Ability to independently review and code operative reports and clinical documentation
Hands-on experience in at least one core specialty: Orthopedic Surgery or Cardiothoracic/Vascular Surgery

Core Surgical Expertise (Any One Required)
Orthopedic Surgery Coding including joint replacements, fracture repairs, arthroscopy, and spine or fusion procedures with strong understanding of global surgery rules and modifier usage

OR

Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Coding including CABG, valve repair/replacement, pacemaker insertions, bronchoscopy, VATS, and vascular interventions with expertise in bundled services and add-on codes

Additional Preferred Expertise
Experience in Same Day Surgery (SDS) or Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) coding workflows
Understanding of outpatient surgical bundling, modifiers, and payer-specific guidelines
Exposure to OB-GYN surgery coding such as cesarean sections, hysterectomies, and laparoscopic procedures
Knowledge of Gastrointestinal (GI) surgery coding including endoscopy, bowel resections, hernia repairs, bariatric procedures, and upper GI surgeries

Key Responsibilities
Accurately code complex surgical procedures across assigned specialties
Ensure compliance with CMS regulations, payer policies, and coding standards
Apply appropriate modifiers and resolve bundling edits effectively
Review operative notes and clinical documentation for completeness and accuracy
Support denial prevention and revenue optimization through precise coding practices
Maintain productivity and quality benchmarks as per organizational standards

Ability to interpret complex surgical documentation and clinical data
Familiarity with EHR systems and medical coding tools
