Job Description: Head of Medical Affairs, Growth & Emerging Markets (GEM)
Location: Singapore

Objectives/Purpose:
The Head of Medical Affairs for Growth & Emerging Markets (GEM) is responsible for supporting the Local Operating Countries (LOCs) across the GEM region. This leadership role aims to build a strong medical affairs community across the region, promote knowledge and experience sharing, and foster a sense of belonging. The Head acts as a medical thought partner for regional executive teams, driving strategic priorities and ensuring the successful execution of the region’s medical affairs goals. The role also involves overseeing the development of expertise within the GEM Therapeutic Areas (TA) of Vaccines and Oncology, enabling cross-functional and cross-border collaboration, and ensuring GEM-specific medical needs are voiced within the Chief Medical Office (CMO) and Research & Development (R&D) organizations.

Accountabilities:

  1. Medical and Scientific Affairs Leadership & Oversight:

    • Lead strategy and deliverables for medical and scientific affairs across the region.
    • Serve as a medical thought partner to the regional president, driving key regional priorities.
    • Align and prioritize resources and budgets to meet regional medical needs.
    • Introduce innovative solutions in response to the dynamic healthcare environment in the region.
    • Collaborate with Global Medical Affairs (GMA) and regional TA leads to ensure alignment.
    • Provide leadership to therapeutically aligned medical directors in Oncology and Vaccines, ensuring scientific quality and budget compliance.
    • Guide Local Operating Country Medical Directors to align and support regional medical and commercial goals.
    • Partner with GMA operations and other stakeholders to design and implement Global Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring region-specific needs are addressed.
    • Provide medical and scientific input to GEM strategic priorities.
    • Work with LOCs and regional management to identify, acquire, develop, and retain key talent.
    • Oversee the integration of strategic medical input into product lifecycle management for Oncology and Vaccines.
    • Anticipate shifts in the marketplace that may present scientific, medical, regulatory, or commercial opportunities.
    • Participate in regional medical and scientific forums, representing Takeda in key scientific discussions.
  2. Leadership & Decision-Making:

    • Demonstrate leadership in a matrix environment, inspiring teams and driving results.
    • Focus on talent development, particularly in medical affairs leadership.
    • Communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Lead teams with a focus on operational excellence, business process transformation, and organizational culture change.
    • Make complex, high-impact decisions and collaborate with key stakeholders to drive solutions.
  3. External Representation & Innovation:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in the region.
    • Represent Takeda in thought leadership activities, bringing external insights into strategic planning.
    • Challenge the status quo and drive innovation within the medical affairs function.
    • Influence the organization’s direction by leveraging knowledge and insights from external engagements.

Education, Behavioral Competencies, and Skills:

  • Education: MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent advanced degree is preferred. A minimum of 10 years of combined experience in the pharmaceutical industry, academic research, or healthcare management is required.
  • Experience:
    • Senior management experience in Global Medical Affairs or a related field, leading large teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
    • Proven track record in business process transformation, organizational culture change, and delivering complex programs.
    • Extensive operational experience in pharmaceutical drug development, with direct exposure to clinical development.
    • Strong leadership skills, particularly in leading multi-disciplinary, globally dispersed teams.
    • Experience in navigating complex matrix environments with limited direct/indirect reports.
    • Expertise in stakeholder management, ensuring alignment and collaboration across functions.
  • Skills:
    • Expertise in medical affairs functions such as clinical research, evidence generation, medical communication, and compliance.
    • Strong healthcare business acumen with deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and marketplace dynamics.
    • Ability to drive strategic initiatives in a rapidly changing environment and lead innovative solutions.

Travel Requirements:

  • This role may involve regular travel within the GEM region and globally as required by business needs.
