About the Role:

Optum is seeking a dedicated Deputy Manager – Medical Coding in Chennai to lead and manage a high-performing team of certified medical coders. You will be responsible for maintaining coding accuracy and productivity, fostering stakeholder relationships, ensuring compliance with quality standards, and driving continuous improvement, all while delivering exceptional service in healthcare documentation operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of certified coders, overseeing performance, discipline, and daily operations.

  • Lead KPIs: productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.

  • Serve as a client-facing lead, managing all client interactions and relationships.

  • Review and analyze performance reports and metrics to guide operational decisions.

  • Drive quality initiatives, internal audits, and compliance improvements.

  • Provide strategic direction and performance coaching to staff.

  • Contribute to operational planning, budget creation, and business strategy.

  • Implement retention strategies to manage attrition effectively.

  • Facilitate conflict resolution, negotiation, and critical issue handling.

  • Regularly appraise performance and deliver informal/formal feedback to team members.

  • Ensure adherence to internal policies and flexible work directives as needed.


Qualifications & Experience Required:

  • Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences, Allied Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, or relevant discipline.

  • Accredited medical coder (AAPC/AHIMA)—CPC, CCS, CPC-H, or CCS-P.

  • 10+ years’ experience in medical coding, with at least 3 years in team lead or managerial roles.

  • Deep knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding systems.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement processes.

  • Proficient in performance management and operational workflows.

  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in employee engagement and coaching.
