Job Description for Concurrent Inpatient Medical Coder (Part-Time)

Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Concurrent Inpatient Medical Coder to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and abstracting acute care inpatient medical records to assign diagnostic and procedural codes. Your goal will be to ensure accurate DRG assignments while maintaining a high standard of coding precision.

Schedule:

  • Ideal schedule: Monday to Friday, 10 AM EST - 2 PM EST (earlier start times may be considered)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures relative to the patient’s healthcare encounter.
  • Select principal diagnoses, procedures, and other relevant codes using UHDDS definitions.
  • Ensure correct DRG assignment and abstract data as per client guidelines.
  • Use Aquity applications for real-time chart coding during scheduled shifts.
  • Query physicians for clarification of ambiguous or conflicting documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and coding roundtables to stay updated on industry best practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, including Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and official reporting guidelines.
  • Ensure that coding credentials are up to date.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and effective communication in all interactions.

Qualifications:

  • Required:

    • Minimum of 3-5 years of acute care coding experience.
    • Experience in inpatient concurrent coding and medical admissions.
    • Proficiency in using Meditech and 3M systems.
    • Ability to perform administrative tasks including managing spreadsheets and emails.
    • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
    • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT coding, reimbursement systems, and regulations.
    • Must pass an inpatient coding proficiency test.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Licenses & Certifications:

    • CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist) or CDIP (Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner).

Knowledge & Skills:

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in coding.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Working Environment:

  • Remote work with extended periods of computer-based work and phone calls.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged computer screen usage and keyboarding.
  • Long periods of sitting in a computer-based work environment.
