Role Overview:

The VP, US Field Medical Lead is responsible for overseeing the US Field Medical Director (FMD) and Field Medical Outcomes (FMO) teams across key therapeutic areas within Specialty Care (SC) and Internal Medicine (IM). This leader will also partner with the Vaccines/AV Field Medical Group Lead. The role involves setting the strategic direction for the US Field Medical organization, ensuring alignment with US Brand Medical Affairs priorities, and leading a high-performing team to maximize medical impact. This includes managing field-based medical professionals, directing resources, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering cross-functional collaborations.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and People Management:

  • Lead and manage the US Field Medical team across SC and IM therapeutic areas.
  • Ensure team development by coaching and mentoring Field Medical Leaders (FMLs), promoting a performance-focused culture.
  • Oversee the recruitment, performance appraisals, compensation planning, and retention of top talent.
  • Collaborate with the US Medical Leadership Team to select and develop new team members when necessary.

Strategic and Operational Leadership:

  • Set the vision and strategic direction for the Field Medical team, ensuring alignment with broader US Medical Affairs and business goals.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including US Brand Medical, Global Medical Affairs, Research & Development, and other business units to meet medical needs across the product lifecycle.
  • Guide the FM team to ensure that key messages and scientific data are communicated accurately and effectively to healthcare professionals (HCPs) and decision-makers.
  • Ensure the team's activities are compliant with both internal policies and external regulations.

Medical Impact and Compliance:

  • Ensure that the Field Medical team communicates new and important medical content and responds to unsolicited medical requests from healthcare professionals.
  • Guide the team in providing medical insights that inform key decisions across clinical development, medical affairs, and commercial functions.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure that the team meets the medical needs of healthcare systems, payers, and patients.
  • Oversee compliance with Pfizer and external guidelines, ensuring team members fulfill responsibilities related to SOPs, policies, and regulatory requirements.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Manage the budget for the US Field Medical organization, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Proactively assess and recommend FTE allocations across the portfolio and major expenditures throughout the fiscal year.
  • Approve travel, training, supplies, and other expenses related to field medical activities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Maintain strong relationships with other functional teams, including Medical Governance, Clinical Sciences, and Commercial functions, ensuring alignment and efficient communication.
  • Represent US Field Medical at key internal governance committees and strategic meetings.
  • Collaborate with commercial teams to ensure the medical professionalism of all field-based activities and communication.

Innovation and Digital Transformation:

  • Stay informed about emerging digital technologies and adopt new tools that enhance the efficiency of field medical communications and customer interactions.
  • Lead the integration of digital resources (e.g., iPads, videoconferencing) into the Field Medical team’s operations to improve medical customer experiences.

Clinical and Research Support:

  • Guide the Field Medical team in providing insights into clinical trials, formulary decisions, and other medical inquiries from external stakeholders.
  • Ensure the team supports clinical development efforts, medical education, and scientific congress participation.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MD, PhD, or PharmD required.
  • Experience:
    • MD: More than 9 years of relevant healthcare experience, including at least 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry.
    • PharmD/PhD: More than 15 years of relevant healthcare experience, including at least 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Field Medical Leadership: Prior experience in field-based medical leadership is strongly preferred.
  • Therapeutic Area Knowledge: Experience in Specialty Care and Internal Medicine therapeutic areas is preferred.
  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and develop teams in a complex, matrixed environment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to motivate and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Digital Proficiency: Experience with digital tools for field medical activities (e.g., iPads, Acronis, WebEx, on-demand videoconferencing).
  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 40% nationally within the US as required for business needs.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual Base Salary: $292,700 to $487,800 (Varies by location).
  • Bonus: Eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a target bonus of 35% of the base salary.
