Amgen is one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, applying cutting-edge science and technology to transform medicine and improve lives. With over four decades of experience, Amgen continues to push boundaries in biotech innovation using AI, data science, and human genetic data to tackle complex health challenges.

Role Overview:
As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you will be a key technical expert responsible for designing, engineering, and scaling ML and Generative AI platforms. Sitting at the intersection of AI innovation and engineering excellence, you will help Amgen create scalable, secure, and production-ready machine learning infrastructure supporting classical ML, deep learning, and LLMs across enterprise use cases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engineer full-stack ML pipelines: from data ingestion, feature engineering, and training to model registration and deployment using tools like Kubeflow, SageMaker Pipelines, and OpenAI SDK.

  • Convert research code into scalable microservices with Docker/Kubernetes, exposing APIs for real-time access.

  • Integrate model services with UI components or workflow engines to deliver sub-second latency AI applications.

  • Optimize ML workflows using quantization, pruning, algorithm selection, and GPU/CPU auto-scaling.

  • Establish robust observability: drift/bias detection, tracing, real-time metrics, and user analytics.

  • Implement security-by-design and responsible AI measures: access controls, encryption, explainability, and lineage tracking.

  • Build reusable MLOps components like experiment tracking systems, model registries, and feature stores.

  • Collaborate with data scientists on model prototyping, scalability assessments, and co-own model KPIs.

  • Evangelize best practices, platform standards, and contribute to AI engineering capability uplift across teams.

Must-Have Skills:

  • 3–5 years of experience in AI/ML and enterprise software engineering.

  • Expertise in a wide range of ML algorithms and architectures (regression, tree ensembles, CNNs, RNNs, transformers, etc.).

  • Experience with vector DBs, RAG pipelines, and GenAI tools such as LangChain, Semantic Kernel.

  • Strong coding skills in Python and Java.

  • Proficiency in containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and MLOps tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Bedrock).

  • Ability to model TCO/NPV and communicate trade-offs with stakeholders.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech sector is highly desirable.

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related discipline.

  • Familiarity with Agile or SAFe methodologies.

  • Published thought-leadership or public speaking on GenAI or AI platform architecture.

  • Certifications in GenAI/ML platforms (e.g., AWS AI, Azure AI Engineer, Google Cloud ML).

Educational Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree: 6–11+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or related field

  • Bachelor’s Degree: 8–13+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or related field

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized

  • Collaborative mindset with an ability to lead initiatives and mentor team members

  • Adaptable with the ability to manage multiple priorities
