Role Summary:
Pfizer is seeking a highly skilled Scientist – Small Molecule Technology to drive process development, technology transfer, and innovation in small molecule chemistry. The role focuses on optimizing synthetic routes, improving yields, reducing costs, and ensuring robust and scalable manufacturing processes for APIs, intermediates, and related compounds.

Key Responsibilities:

Process Development & Experimental Execution

  • Perform literature searches and identify various synthetic routes for small molecules.

  • Develop processes for APIs, intermediates, and RSMs, focusing on yield improvement and cost reduction.

  • Plan and conduct experiments following process governance: lab feasibility, optimization, pre-validation, CPP, and validation studies.

  • Design and perform DoE to support technology transfer and scale-up activities.

  • Interpret experimental results and propose process improvements to enhance quality, yield, and cost efficiency.

Technology Transfer & Scale-Up

  • Facilitate technology transfer to manufacturing scale at plant sites.

  • Support KGL/MS&T departments in resolving scale-up challenges and implementing modifications for a robust and scalable process.

  • Investigate challenges and develop practical solutions to ensure successful scale-up.

  • Prepare scientific reports, protocols, and necessary documentation for technology transfer.

Innovation & Impurity Management

  • Propose and execute innovation projects related to process improvements.

  • Synthesize and characterize process-related impurities for quality and regulatory compliance.

Laboratory & Safety Management

  • Ensure compliance with Good Documentation Practices, Safety procedures, and cGMP regulations.

  • Manage laboratory requirements, maintain inventory, and oversee equipment installation and qualification.

  • Maintain laboratory safety, compliance, and manage a small team where applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with expertise in small molecule synthesis and analytical characterization of organic compounds.

  • Comprehensive understanding of industry, functional, and Pfizer-specific principles, concepts, and best practices.

  • Strong knowledge of conducting complex reactions, purification of small-scale materials, and quality evaluation.

  • Leadership capability with knowledge of basic team management principles.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Self-starter, highly motivated, collaborative, and action-oriented.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 4–6 years of experience in process development, small molecule synthesis, and technology transfer in an R&D or pharmaceutical environment.

  • Hands-on experience with DoE, process optimization, scale-up, and cGMP-compliant operations.

  • Proven ability to propose process improvements, manage laboratory operations, and support manufacturing scale technology transfer.

Work Arrangement

  • On-premise at the Chennai location.
