About the Role

Pfizer is seeking a Scientist – Small Molecule Technology to support the development, optimization, and scale-up of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates. This role plays a critical part in process development, technology transfer, impurity characterization, and manufacturing scale-up, ensuring robust, cost-effective, and compliant chemical processes.

The position requires strong expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, experimental design, and cGMP-compliant process development within a pharmaceutical R&D or manufacturing environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive scientific literature reviews to identify and evaluate viable synthetic routes

  • Develop and optimize processes for APIs, intermediates, and raw starting materials (RSMs)

  • Drive yield improvement and cost reduction initiatives through process optimization

  • Plan and execute laboratory experiments aligned with process governance stages including feasibility, optimization, pre-validation, CPP, and validation

  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DoE) to support process understanding and technology transfer

  • Analyze experimental data and recommend improvements related to quality, yield, safety, and scalability

  • Lead technology transfer activities to manufacturing plants and support MS&T and Kilo Lab (KGL) teams during scale-up

  • Investigate process challenges and propose scientifically sound solutions

  • Synthesize, isolate, and characterize process-related impurities

  • Prepare scientific reports, protocols, and technical documentation for manufacturing transfer

  • Ensure strict adherence to cGMP, safety standards, and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)

  • Support equipment installation, qualification, and laboratory readiness

  • Manage laboratory operations, inventory, safety compliance, and supervise junior team members

  • Contribute to innovation and continuous improvement projects within small molecule development


Experience Required

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry or related discipline)

  • 3–6 years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical R&D, process development, or manufacturing support

    • Postdoctoral experience may be considered equivalent to industry experience

  • Proven hands-on experience in small molecule synthesis, reaction optimization, and purification

  • Exposure to technology transfer and scale-up activities in a GMP environment


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and analytical characterization of organic compounds

  • In-depth understanding of process development, impurity profiling, and scale-up principles

  • Knowledge of cGMP, safety regulations, and pharmaceutical quality systems

  • Ability to independently design experiments and solve complex technical challenges

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and collaborative working style

  • Highly motivated, self-driven professional with strong problem-solving skills
