Role Summary
The Scientist – Small Molecule Technology is responsible for the development of efficient, scalable, and safe processes for intermediates and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). This role involves process design, optimization, scale-up, and collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams to support Pfizer’s manufacturing and supply chain operations.

Key Responsibilities

Process Development & Optimization

  • Develop robust and scalable synthetic processes for intermediates and APIs suitable for pilot plant and commercial production.

  • Conduct literature reviews and identify alternative synthetic routes for process development.

  • Perform lab feasibility studies, process optimization, pre-validation, Critical Process Parameters (CPP) studies, and validation experiments.

  • Plan and execute stress studies, holding time studies, mass balance, recovery, and scale-up studies.

  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and provide scientific rationale for process decisions.

  • Apply novel experimental approaches, investigating innovative methodologies to improve efficiency and safety.

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Engagement

  • Partner with Process Engineers, Analytical Chemists, Process Safety teams, Crystallization Technologists, and pilot plant colleagues across Pfizer global sites.

  • Support production teams in scale-up and troubleshooting of process challenges.

  • Coordinate with regulatory, quality, and instrumentation teams for compliance and instrument qualification.

  • Participate in project discussions, brainstorming sessions, and process improvement initiatives.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Prepare technical reports, experimental records, and project updates to support management decisions.

  • Ensure adherence to cGMP, GSP procedures, and internal compliance standards.

  • Maintain accurate records in electronic lab notebooks (Biovia eLN, GDMS, LIMS, etc.) and other documentation systems.

  • Apply ICH guidelines and safety principles in all laboratory activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related field.

  • Strong experience in synthetic chemistry, reaction development, characterization (NMR, IR, Mass Spectrometry), chromatography, and crystallization techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to design experiments, interpret data, and provide scientific recommendations.

  • Experience in cross-functional and matrixed teams, with strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Proficiency in preparing scientific reports, project documentation, and compliance adherence.

  • Knowledge of process safety, quality principles, and laboratory instrumentation.
