At MilliporeSigma, we innovate at the intersection of Healthcare, Life Science, and Electronics, with a mission to enrich lives and spark discovery. Our colleagues around the globe share a passion for science and technology, pushing boundaries to imagine the unimaginable.

This role does not offer sponsorship for work authorization. External applicants must be eligible to work in the US.

Your Role

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Director of R&D – Industrialization to lead the transition of innovative single-use technologies and bioprocessing systems from product development into full-scale manufacturing. You will serve as the critical interface between R&D and Operations, ensuring new product introductions (NPIs) are scalable, cost-effective, manufacturable, and automation-ready for commercial volumes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Industrialization Efforts: Define and execute the design transfer and industrialization strategy for new products, ensuring manufacturing readiness, quality, and regulatory compliance.

  • Manufacturability & Automation Readiness: Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Automation (DFA) principles early in development. Drive modularization and platforming to reduce cost, complexity, and lead times.

  • Cost Optimization: Collaborate with Supply Chain, Procurement, and Product Management to meet cost targets via value engineering, automation, material selection, and optimized assembly processes.

  • Cross-functional Liaison: Act as a bridge between R&D and Manufacturing to proactively address scale-up and automation challenges during development and post-launch.

  • Process & Automation Development: Partner with Engineering and Automation teams to define and validate automated/semi-automated assembly processes.

  • Risk Mitigation: Use robust testing, pilot builds, and DFMEA/PFMEA to identify and minimize technical and operational risks.

  • Stage-Gate Leadership: Own industrialization milestones and ensure deliverables for manufacturability, automation, and scalability are achieved.

  • Sustaining Engineering Interface: Support resolution of manufacturability and automation issues on existing products through R&D-driven insights and continuous improvement initiatives.

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field (advanced degree preferred).

  • 10+ years in R&D, process development, or industrialization roles within bioprocessing, life sciences, or medical device industries.

  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing cross-functional teams.

  • Proven experience with single-use technologies (e.g., bioreactors, filtration systems, fluid management).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of GMP manufacturing, quality systems, and regulatory requirements.

  • Expertise in automation design (geometry optimization, fixture design, robotic/semi-automated integration).

  • Proficiency in DFM/DFA, lean manufacturing, process validation, and cost modeling.

  • Skilled in leading cross-functional teams through complex design transfer activities.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Travel

  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel to development sites, manufacturing facilities, and suppliers.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Range: $159,700 – $271,600 (based on location, skills, and experience).

  • Eligible for sales or performance-based bonuses.

  • Benefits include:

    • Health, dental, and vision insurance

    • Paid time off (PTO)
