Job Overview

AbbVie is seeking a Senior Scientist II – Biologics Purification to join its Biologics Discovery Sciences team in North Chicago, IL. This role is critical to advancing next-generation biologic and bispecific antibody therapies by delivering high-purity drug candidates that support both in vitro and in vivo research programs.

The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership in purification process development, apply advanced chromatography and bioprocessing techniques, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to accelerate biologics discovery and development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead purification and downstream processing of bispecific and complex biologic molecules to support discovery and preclinical development

  • Design and execute robust purification and process development strategies with scalability considerations for future manufacturing

  • Apply advanced chromatography, filtration, and large-scale bioprocessing techniques to optimize yield, purity, and product quality

  • Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE), in silico modeling, and predictive tools to optimize protein separation and process performance

  • Integrate, analyze, and manage analytical and process data using LIMS, ETL tools, SDMS platforms, and data extraction APIs

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, translating molecular and biophysical insights into actionable purification solutions

  • Ensure rigorous scientific documentation, data integrity, and compliance with internal quality standards

  • Present scientific findings and process strategies to technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Stay current with emerging literature, technologies, and industry best practices to drive innovation and continuous improvement


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline

  • Experience requirements by degree level:

    • Bachelor’s degree: typically 12+ years of relevant industry experience

    • Master’s degree: typically 10+ years of relevant industry experience

    • PhD: typically 4+ years of relevant industry experience

  • Deep expertise in large-scale biologics purification and downstream bioprocessing

  • Strong proficiency with chromatography and bioprocess software and tools, such as UNICORN, Chromeleon, Empower, JMP, Minitab, Python, and SDMS platforms

  • Demonstrated experience applying DOE and in silico modeling to predict and optimize protein separation behavior

  • Solid understanding of biologic molecular characteristics and post-translational modifications

  • Experience with data integration, ETL workflows, APIs, and LIMS platforms is highly desirable

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research environment


Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Range: USD 106,500 – 202,500 (base salary; varies by location and experience)

  • Eligibility for short-term and long-term incentive programs
