Role Overview

As a Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health, you’ll play an essential role in supporting primary care providers (PCPs) by ensuring clinical documentation is accurate, specific, and timely. This enables providers to focus entirely on patient care. Scribes are involved throughout the patient care journey—from daily huddles to live exam room documentation and post-visit tasks.

The role includes a comprehensive training program, preparing you to assist with clinical workflows, value-based care, population health, and chronic condition documentation. This role is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in healthcare or health informatics, seeking practical, paid experience in a clinical setting.


Key Responsibilities

Documenting Patient Encounters (~80%)

  • Observe and document all patient visits in real time with providers.
  • Record history of present illness, physical exam, assessment, and care plans.
  • Assign accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Prepare after-visit summaries for patients.
  • Collaborate with providers to ensure documentation precision.

Clinical Documentation Improvement (~10%)

  • Request and review medical records.
  • Leverage population health tools to improve documentation.
  • Support clinical documentation reviews and daily huddles.
  • Identify and address clinical documentation improvement opportunities.

Administrative Support (~10%)

  • Place orders and referrals as directed.
  • Address tasks and facilitate next steps in patient care.
  • Assist care teams with tasks related to clinical documentation.

What We’re Looking For

Knowledge & Experience

  • Required:

    • Familiarity with medical terminology and common medications.
    • Prior exposure to clinical environments (e.g., shadowing, volunteering).
    • U.S. work authorization and compliance with HIPAA.
  • Preferred:

    • Previous experience as a scribe or in transcription.
    • Multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Polish, Russian).

Skills

  • Advanced listening and strong communication abilities.
  • Exceptional computer literacy and ability to learn technical workflows.
  • Typing speed of 70+ WPM strongly preferred.

  • Adaptability to new workflows and clinical concepts.
  • A team player with strong self-initiative.
  • Ability to work full-time, in-person, with predictable hours.
  • Commitment to at least one year in the role (two or more years preferred).
