Position Overview

Optum is seeking a Full-Time ProFee Surgical Medical Coder experienced in professional (ProFee) coding for surgical specialties. This role requires precise coding of CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS codes, adherence to official guidelines and collaboration with clinical teams to ensure complete and accurate documentation. Remote work is available anywhere within the United States.

Standard work schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. Overtime may be required based on business needs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review medical records and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10 and modifier codes for professional surgical services according to official and facility-specific guidelines.

  • Demonstrate expert-level proficiency across ProFee coding specialties including General Surgery, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, Cardiovascular, Neurosurgery and Evaluation & Management.

  • Abstract additional clinical details from charts as needed to support coding accuracy.

  • Follow ethical coding standards established by AAPC and AHIMA.

  • Maintain productivity and quality benchmarks set by Optum Coding Operations.

  • Provide documentation feedback to providers and initiate physician queries when clarification is necessary.

  • Stay updated on coding requirements and training materials shared by management and quality teams.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, audits and educational programs.

  • Support other coding-related tasks as assigned by leadership.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED (or higher).

  • Active professional coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC (CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, CPC). Certification must be maintained annually.

  • Minimum 3 years of professional (ProFee) outpatient surgical coding experience.

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding.

  • Proficiency using Windows-based computer systems, Microsoft Excel (creating and editing spreadsheets) and EMR platforms.

  • Ability to flex across multiple facilities as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays or overtime based on business need.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is determined by several factors, including education, certifications, experience and local labor market conditions.

  • Hourly Rate: USD 20.00 to 35.72 (based on full-time schedule).

  • Comprehensive benefits package, incentive programs, equity stock purchase options and 401(k) contributions are available, subject to eligibility.
