Position Overview

We are seeking a Scientific Director – Medicinal Chemistry with a focus on Oral Macrocyclic Peptides to join our Peptide Therapeutics Team within the Biotechnology Discovery Research division in Indianapolis. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leading drug discovery efforts, particularly in oral macrocyclic peptides, and driving scientific strategies to move novel therapeutics from the discovery phase through clinical development. This role involves leading a multidisciplinary team, developing strategies, and overseeing the execution of research efforts to advance oral peptide therapeutics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Lead the Medicinal Chemistry Group in advancing research on oral macrocyclic peptides, from target identification to lead optimization. Manage and mentor scientists within the team and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strategic Planning: Formulate, implement, and execute strategies for the advancement of peptide research projects, ensuring timely progress from discovery through candidate declaration.
  • Scientific Expertise: Apply knowledge of peptide synthesis, conformational analysis, molecular modeling, and computational methods to optimize lead candidates. Utilize SAR strategies to enhance pharmaceutical properties of peptides.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Discovery Chemistry, Therapeutic Area Teams, Drug Disposition, Product Development, and Regulatory Affairs to drive successful therapeutic development.
  • Innovation: Stay at the forefront of new developments in peptide therapeutics, implementing fresh ideas and solutions to overcome challenges related to peptide engineering, drug development, and biological activity.
  • Team Development: Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture within the team. Provide mentorship and coaching to scientists, promote diversity and inclusion, and encourage innovative thinking and the generation of high-quality scientific hypotheses.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • PhD or postdoctoral degree in Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Peptide Chemistry, or a related field with a focus on drug discovery and development.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company, specifically in peptide therapeutics and drug discovery.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in oral macrocyclic peptides, including familiarity with library-based screening technologies (e.g., OBOC, solution-phase, AS/MS, mRNA display).
  • Proven leadership in developing novel medicines, with a strong understanding of computational and structural methods for hit identification and lead optimization.
  • Successful track record of advancing drug candidates from concept to clinical development.
  • Experience with AI/machine learning techniques for peptide development and optimization.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with senior leadership within a matrixed global organization.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to lead high-performing teams.
