Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director – Oncology serves as a senior, field-based scientific expert responsible for advancing clinical, scientific, and research exchange with oncology healthcare professionals. This role supports Exelixis Medical Affairs across the NE–KS–MO–AR region and contributes to high-level scientific engagement, clinical development support, and cross-functional medical initiatives. The MSL Director builds trusted scientific relationships, supports investigator-driven research, and ensures timely field insights aligned with oncology advancements.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific Engagement & Field Leadership

  • Serve as the primary scientific field contact for Exelixis Medical Affairs.

  • Engage regional and national oncology thought leaders and healthcare professionals.

  • Exchange accurate and balanced scientific information with external stakeholders.

  • Manage and review investigator-initiated study (IIS) interests and submissions.

  • Provide detailed field intelligence, including competitive insights and therapeutic landscape updates.

Clinical Development & Study Support

  • Support clinical development through site recommendations, initiation visits, and communication facilitation.

  • Assist in patient accrual support and ensure ongoing collaboration with study teams.

  • Participate in or lead advisory board meetings and contribute scientific insights.

Scientific Training & Cross-Functional Support

  • Deliver scientific training to internal teams and external partners.

  • Represent Exelixis at key medical conferences; prepare and submit session summaries.

  • Provide cross-functional scientific support within approved guidelines.

Territory Management & Professional Excellence

  • Maintain strong scientific knowledge of oncology compounds, disease areas, and relevant clinical studies.

  • Manage the assigned region with high standards of excellence.

  • Support broader MSL organizational goals and contribute beyond assigned geography as needed.

  • Serve as a professional role model and provide guidance to Associate MSLs.


Education, Experience, Skills & Requirements

Required Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Master’s degree (Oncology PA/NP) with active doctoral pursuit and at least 11 years of relevant experience, or

  • Accredited doctorate degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., D.N.P., D.O.) with a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or

  • Equivalent scientific and clinical experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of MSL experience in therapeutic oncology.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to travel up to 50% including some weekends.

  • Strong ability to follow direction, adapt to change, and work within compliance requirements.

  • Excellent communication skills for both small and large scientific audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Strong organizational, time-management, and prioritization abilities.

  • Evidence of project leadership and the ability to recognize when cross-functional input is required.

  • High integrity and consistent adherence to scientific and ethical standards.


Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary Range: USD 231,000 to 295,500 annually
Salary is adjusted based on U.S. geographic market, experience, internal equity, and job-related skills.
