Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director – Biotechnology & Oncology

Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director – Oncology is a senior, field-based scientific expert responsible for engaging oncology healthcare professionals, strengthening scientific collaborations, and supporting clinical and medical affairs initiatives. This role represents Exelixis across the California region, interacting with local, regional, and national oncology societies and professionals. The position requires deep scientific expertise, strong communication capabilities, and a proven ability to lead scientific engagement within the biotechnology and oncology landscape.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific Engagement & External Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary field contact for Exelixis Medical Affairs.

  • Build strong scientific relationships with oncology thought leaders and healthcare professionals.

  • Provide accurate, balanced scientific information to external audiences.

  • Support and manage investigator-initiated study (IIS) requests.

  • Report field insights including competitive intelligence and evolving treatment-landscape perspectives.

Clinical Development Support

  • Contribute to clinical development through site recommendations and study initiation activities.

  • Facilitate communication with study sites and support patient accrual efforts.

  • Participate in or lead advisory board meetings and scientific discussions.

Scientific Training & Medical Affairs Support

  • Deliver scientific training for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Represent Exelixis at major medical conferences and prepare detailed session summaries.

  • Provide cross-functional scientific support across teams, in line with organizational guidelines.

Leadership & Territory Management

  • Maintain strong scientific knowledge of oncology compounds, disease areas, and ongoing clinical studies.

  • Demonstrate excellence in managing the assigned California territory.

  • Serve as a role model for Associate MSLs and contribute to broader team initiatives.

  • Support business needs beyond geographic territory when required.


Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Required Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Master’s degree (Oncology PA or NP) actively pursuing a doctorate with a minimum of 11 years of related experience, or

  2. Doctorate degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., D.N.P., or D.O.) with a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or

  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of MSL experience in therapeutic oncology is strongly preferred.

Key Skills

  • Ability to travel up to 50%, including some weekends.

  • Strong communication skills for engaging both small and large scientific audiences.

  • High adaptability, able to accept guidance and respond to organizational changes.

  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.

  • Strong project leadership, time-management, and prioritization skills.

  • Commitment to compliance and scientific integrity.


Compensation and Benefits

Base Salary Range: USD 231,000 – 295,500 annually
Compensation is based on geographic region, experience, skills, and internal equity.
