Position Overview

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director is a senior scientific and field-based expert responsible for engaging oncology healthcare professionals, developing scientific collaborations, and representing Exelixis within key thought-leader networks. This role supports clinical development initiatives, provides scientific insight, and strengthens the organization’s presence across regional, national, and professional oncology communities.

This position is ideal for experienced oncology MSL professionals who excel in scientific exchange, stakeholder engagement, and territory leadership.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific Engagement & External Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary field contact for Exelixis Medical Affairs.

  • Engage national and regional oncology thought leaders and healthcare professionals in scientific, clinical, and research discussions.

  • Provide accurate, balanced, and compliant scientific information to external stakeholders.

  • Report field insights including competitive intelligence, clinical perspectives, and treatment landscape trends.

Clinical Research & Development Support

  • Manage and evaluate investigator-initiated study (IIS) proposals.

  • Support clinical development teams through site recommendations, initiation visit participation, and communication facilitation.

  • Assist in clinical trial accrual activities as needed.

Medical Affairs & Strategic Scientific Support

  • Participate in and occasionally lead advisory board meetings.

  • Represent Exelixis at medical conferences and prepare session summaries.

  • Provide scientific training for internal teams and external partners.

  • Offer cross-functional scientific support in alignment with Medical Affairs objectives.

Territory & Organizational Leadership

  • Maintain strong scientific knowledge of oncology compounds, relevant studies, and disease landscapes.

  • Demonstrate high performance in territory management and contribute to the success of the broader MSL organization.

  • Serve as a role model for Associate MSLs and contribute to cross-regional initiatives.


Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Required Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following:

  1. Master’s degree (Oncology PA or NP) with active pursuit of a doctorate and minimum 11 years of related experience, or

  2. Doctorate degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., D.N.P., or D.O.) with minimum 8 years of related experience, or

  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of MSL experience in oncology therapeutic areas strongly preferred.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to travel up to 50%, including occasional weekends.

  • Strong communication skills for small and large group engagement.

  • Ability to adapt to change, accept guidance, and follow organizational direction.

  • Strong individual contributor with excellent teamwork and collaboration abilities.

  • Proven ability to lead projects and recognize when cross-functional input is required.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation reflects cost-of-labor variations across U.S. markets.
Base Pay Range: USD 231,000 – 295,500 annually
Final offer depends on location, experience, skills, and internal equity.
