Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director – Biotechnology & Oncology

Location: Northeastern United States (NY, ME, NH, VT Region)
Work Type: Full-Time | Field-Based Role

Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director serves as a senior, field-based scientific expert responsible for engaging oncology healthcare professionals across the assigned region. This role focuses on scientific exchange, clinical insight generation, collaboration development, and strategic support of medical affairs objectives. The MSL Director builds and strengthens scientific relationships with local, regional, and national oncology stakeholders, including thought leaders, clinicians, academic centers, and professional organizations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary field contact for Exelixis Medical Affairs within the assigned region.

  • Engage national and regional oncology leaders, investigators, and healthcare professionals through scientifically credible and balanced interactions.

  • Communicate accurate, fair, and evidence-based scientific information to external stakeholders.

  • Manage investigator-initiated research inquiries and ensure proper follow-up.

  • Gather and relay field insights, competitive intelligence, and clinical perspectives relevant to Exelixis compounds and oncology treatment landscapes.

  • Support clinical development operations including site identification, site initiation, communication enhancement, and patient accrual activities.

  • Participate in or lead advisory board meetings.

  • Deliver scientific training internally and externally as needed.

  • Represent the company at major medical congresses and prepare concise post-conference reports.

  • Provide compliant cross-functional scientific support across organizational teams.

  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of oncology therapeutic areas, emerging clinical data, and Exelixis investigational and marketed products.

  • Demonstrate strong territory management skills while contributing to overall Medical Affairs success.

  • Mentor and model best practices for Associate MSLs.

  • Contribute to cross-territory projects as required.


Education, Experience, and Skills Requirements

Education

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Master’s level oncology PA or NP with active pursuit of a doctorate and a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience; or

  • Accredited doctorate degree in a life science or clinical discipline (PharmD, PhD, DSc, DNP, DO) with a minimum of 8 years of related experience; or

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of MSL experience, preferably within therapeutic oncology.

  • Strong understanding of oncology clinical practice, research processes, and scientific communication.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to travel up to 50%, including occasional weekends.

  • Strong verbal communication skills for small and large scientific audiences.

  • Ability to manage time, priorities, and territory responsibilities efficiently.

  • Proven capability as both an independent contributor and a collaborative team partner.

  • Demonstrated project leadership and the ability to identify when cross-functional input is necessary.

  • Commitment to compliant, ethical, and scientifically rigorous execution of responsibilities.


Compensation & Benefits

Compensation reflects labor costs across multiple U.S. markets.
Base Salary Range: USD 231,000 – 295,500 annually, adjusted based on work location, experience, and internal equity.
