Role Overview

AstraZeneca is pioneering next-generation obesity and weight-management therapies—both oral and injectable—designed for durability, tolerability, and improved cardiometabolic outcomes.

The External Scientific Engagement (ESE) Director – Obesity is a strategic medical leader within the BioPharmaceutical Medical (BPM) Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) organization.
This role drives AstraZeneca’s external scientific leadership through collaborations with Key External Experts (KEEs), scientific societies, and global healthcare stakeholders to shape the future of obesity care.


Key Responsibilities

1. External Partnerships & Scientific Leadership

  • Build and manage partnerships with scientific societies and healthcare decision-makers globally.

  • Strengthen AstraZeneca’s leadership in obesity and CVRM diseases through strategic external collaborations.

2. Strategic Advocacy & KEE Engagement

  • Develop and execute strategic advocacy plans.

  • Identify and cultivate KEEs for participation in global/regional/local medical activities aligned with CVRM strategic plans.

3. External Initiatives & Medical Education

  • Lead external initiatives including grants, sponsorships, disease education, and policy-aligned activities.

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs teams to deliver impactful medical education incorporating:

    • New clinical evidence

    • Real-world evidence (RWE)

    • Updated clinical guidelines

  • Enhance HCP confidence in the CVRM portfolio and improve patient outcomes.

4. Clinical Guidelines & Implementation Strategy

  • Map and monitor clinical guidelines across the CVRM therapeutic area.

  • Communicate key guideline changes and build global implementation plans.


Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Advanced degree strongly preferred: MS, MD, PharmD, PhD, or equivalent

Experience

  • 6+ years in the biopharmaceutical industry

  • Experience in Medical Affairs or other externally facing roles

  • Strong understanding of healthcare systems

  • Proven ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals and scientific societies

  • Strong scientific knowledge of CVRM diseases; specific experience in obesity preferred

  • Experience with the U.S. healthcare system strongly preferred

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual Base Salary Range: $180,800 – $271,300
    (Exact salary depends on experience, skills, and regional market)

  • Eligible for:

    • Short-term incentive bonus

    • Equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles)

    • Retirement contributions (hourly roles)

    • Commission eligibility (sales roles, if applicable)
