Role Overview

Abbott is seeking an experienced Medical Review Officer (MRO) to oversee the integrity and accuracy of drug testing review processes within our Toxicology Business Unit. The MRO applies clinical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and professional judgment to interpret confirmed positive or invalid drug test results. This role involves direct communication with donors, laboratories, and pharmacies to ensure accurate final determinations, compliance with DOT and federal regulations, and upholding the highest occupational health standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review, interpret, and finalize drug test results in accordance with DOT, federal, and state regulations.

  • Conduct telephonic interviews with donors to identify legitimate medical explanations for non-negative lab results.

  • Sign off on administrative documents requiring MRO review, including prescription verifications, medical records, and correction memoranda.

  • Apply clinical judgment to determine final drug test results affecting employment and workplace safety.

  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to MRO staff, labs, collection sites, and Workplace Solutions clients.

  • Offer consultation and updates to federal agency representatives regarding reviewed cases.

  • Maintain accurate MRO records and ensure readiness for internal and external audits.

  • Stay current on changes in DOT/FMCSA, HHS, and occupational health regulations.

  • Support the development and execution of annual Medical Services and Drug & Alcohol Testing Services goals.

  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and uphold Abbott Rapid Diagnostics Quality standards.


Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)

  • Current MRO certification (AAMRO or MROCC)

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience in occupational health settings

  • Active license to practice medicine in the United States

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills; able to interact tactfully with individuals of varied backgrounds.
