Role Overview

Abbott Heart Failure (HF) develops devices for patients living with heart failure, focusing on hemodynamic monitoring and mechanical circulatory support. We are seeking a Director of Medical Affairs to join our dedicated medical affairs team. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, this senior leadership role will provide strategic and operational medical oversight across product development, clinical research, quality, compliance, and external engagement with key stakeholders.

The Director will serve as a medical representative for Abbott HF to regulatory agencies, professional societies, and investigators, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of HF therapies.


Key Responsibilities

Medical Leadership & Clinical Oversight

  • Develop medical opinions, platform documents, and Health Hazard Assessments for Abbott HF products.

  • Provide medical input for commercial and promotional activities in alignment with compliance standards.

  • Serve as a medical representative on Risk Evaluation and Investigation teams.

  • Support product safety and MDR reporting as required.

  • Provide medical guidance for quality/regulatory communications, technical bulletins, and directives.

  • Participate in off-label discussions, documenting appropriately for compliance purposes.

  • Offer clinical expertise in new product development initiatives.

Clinical Research & Investigator Programs

  • Oversee Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS) and Research Grant programs.

  • Provide medical input for clinical protocol design, interpretation, and presentation of clinical research data.

  • Ensure alignment of clinical evidence generation with business strategy and regulatory requirements.

External Engagement

  • Represent Abbott HF to Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), professional societies, and regulatory agencies.

  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer in external stakeholder interactions, including advisory boards and medical congresses.

  • Support professional education initiatives and dissemination of scientific content.

Operational & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Maintain and update medical affairs procedural documentation, submitting change requests as needed.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, Commercial, Regulatory, and Clinical Affairs to integrate medical strategy into business objectives.

  • Serve as a senior resource for medical and clinical decision-making across the organization.


Qualifications & Experience

  • MD strongly preferred; PhD in a relevant scientific field will be considered.

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in cardiovascular medicine.

  • Proven experience in clinical research, data interpretation, and presentation.

  • Strong leadership and strategic thinking abilities.

  • Exceptional presentation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to work remotely with up to 70% travel as required.


Compensation

The base salary range for this position is USD 171,300 – 342,700, depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Compensation may vary based on business needs and market considerations.
