Role Overview

Merck is seeking an Executive Director, Global Market Access – Ophthalmology to lead the development and execution of global access strategies, payer value propositions, and pricing frameworks for its Ophthalmology portfolio. This senior leadership role reports to the Associate Vice President, Global Market Access, and is a key member of the GMAx Pharma leadership team.

The Executive Director will guide a high-performing team, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and drive sustainable access strategies that integrate with clinical development, commercial plans, and value evidence generation.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement global market access, pricing, and reimbursement strategies for the Ophthalmology portfolio.

  • Co-lead integrated global access and launch plans, ensuring alignment with clinical, commercial, and medical strategies.

  • Analyze payer insights, market access data, and competitive landscapes to inform evidence-based access strategies.

  • Provide strategic guidance for lifecycle management (LCM) and pipeline products, including 4th hurdle framework assessments.

Team Leadership & Coaching

  • Lead, inspire, and coach the Global Ophthalmology Market Access team.

  • Build a high-performing team capable of delivering innovative and sustainable market access solutions.

  • Ensure clear communication and alignment across regional and local market access teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Commercial, R&D, Medical Affairs, Outcomes Research, Policy, and Communications teams to integrate access strategy into overall business objectives.

  • Collaborate with Global Pricing, Sustainable Access Solutions, and Business Development teams to support organizational goals.

  • Align with local and regional teams to implement effective access, contracting, and pricing strategies.

Stakeholder Engagement & Innovation

  • Act as a trusted advisor to internal and external stakeholders, including payers, policy makers, and advocacy groups.

  • Develop innovative access solutions and negotiation strategies to strengthen market leadership.

  • Influence global and regional teams to overcome barriers and improve patient access.


Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • BA/BS (Master’s preferred in Business Administration, Health Policy, or Health Economics).

  • 10+ years’ experience in market access, pricing/reimbursement, health policy, health economics, sales, marketing, or related roles.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare systems, reimbursement models, and HTA processes globally.

  • Proven strategic thinking, problem-solving, and leadership in matrixed organizations.

  • Experience leading cross-functional, geographically diverse teams.

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.

  • Commercially minded with strong business acumen.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in ophthalmology or specialty pharmaceutical portfolios.

  • Expertise in global business strategy and health economic modeling.

  • Prior people management experience and ability to develop high-performing teams.
