Role Overview

Abbott is seeking a Director of Medical Affairs to provide strategic medical leadership for its Heart Failure portfolio. This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping medical strategy, overseeing clinical research activities, supporting product safety and performance, and strengthening scientific engagement with key external stakeholders.

The Director will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, R&D, and Market Access—to ensure medical strategies align with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and global medical standards.


Key Responsibilities

Medical & Scientific Leadership

  • Lead the overall medical affairs strategy for the Heart Failure portfolio.

  • Provide expert medical input across product development, lifecycle management, and evidence generation.

  • Oversee clinical research initiatives, including investigator-initiated studies (IIS) and research grants.

Clinical Research & Evidence Generation

  • Guide clinical strategy to support product safety, efficacy, and performance.

  • Support regulatory submissions and scientific documentation with robust medical and clinical insights.

  • Contribute to risk management and post-market surveillance activities for innovative technologies.

External Scientific Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), professional societies, and advisory boards.

  • Represent Abbott at national and international medical congresses and scientific forums.

  • Support publication planning, including abstracts, manuscripts, and scientific presentations.

Internal Collaboration & Education

  • Deliver internal and external medical education on heart failure therapies and technologies.

  • Partner with commercial and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between medical strategy and business goals.

  • Provide scientific guidance for promotional materials, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.

Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure all medical affairs activities adhere to company policies, industry codes, and ethical standards.

  • Support product safety governance and contribute to ongoing risk-benefit assessments.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 12 years of total professional experience, including at least 5 years within the pharmaceutical or medical device industry.

  • Demonstrated expertise in medical affairs leadership, preferably within cardiovascular or heart failure therapeutic areas.

  • Strong scientific, clinical, and business acumen with the ability to translate data into strategy.

  • Proven experience leading cross-functional initiatives and engaging senior external stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and executive-level influence skills.


Compensation

The base salary range for this position is USD 149,300 – 298,700, depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Compensation may vary based on market and business considerations.
