About the Role

Optum, a global leader in technology-enabled healthcare, is seeking an experienced Supervisor – Coding to oversee end-to-end operations, team leadership, client communication, performance excellence, and coding quality management. This role is pivotal in supporting operational success while ensuring compliance with evolving coding and billing regulations across healthcare services.

As part of Optum's expanding healthcare operations, you will play a critical leadership role in driving productivity, enabling performance, and contributing to high-impact healthcare outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding, billing rules, and regulatory updates.

  • Monitor key operational metrics including productivity, quality, turnaround time (TAT), attendance, and attrition.

  • Deliver quick and accurate data-based decisions using strong analytical capabilities.

  • Oversee team performance, discipline, and project-level operations.

  • Provide subject matter expertise and functional leadership across assigned projects.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead and manage all client communications and serve as the primary point of contact.

  • Maintain strong relationships with internal teams and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Conduct periodic report reviews, performance analysis, and operational assessments.

People & Performance Management

  • Create a positive, collaborative, and productive work environment.

  • Set team priorities, resolve operational issues, and guide staff toward achieving targets.

  • Lead retention strategies, manage attrition, and support workforce planning.

  • Deliver formal and informal coaching sessions and provide consistent performance feedback.

  • Identify training needs in collaboration with SMEs, auditors, and trainers.

Quality, Compliance & Process Improvement

  • Support internal audits and ensure adherence to compliance requirements.

  • Initiate quality improvement activities and process enhancement strategies.

  • Evaluate operational processes and recommend system or workflow improvements.

  • Prepare and contribute to annual business plans, including budgets and resource needs.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Follow all company policies, work location requirements, shift flexibility, and operational directives.

  • Adapt to changes in business environment, processes, and team structure as required.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine
    (including BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, or related fields).

Certifications

  • Certified coder: AAPC / AHIMA
    Accepted certifications include: CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P

Experience

  • Minimum 10+ years of hands-on medical coding experience.

  • Minimum 3+ years experience in a Team Lead, Supervisor, or managerial coding role.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Medical terminology

    • Human anatomy and physiology

    • Pathophysiology

    • Healthcare reimbursement methodologies

  • Ability to guide team members and enable achievement of performance targets.

  • Proficiency in workflow management, performance monitoring, and operational planning.

  • Strong analytical thinking and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability in employee engagement, client satisfaction, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Capability to identify performance gaps and deliver effective coaching and training.

  • Ability to manage attendance, daily operations, workload distribution, and team development.
