About the Role

The Senior Director, Scientific Strategy – Patient-Centered Research (PCR) serves as a key scientific leader within Thermo Fisher Scientific’s global Clinical Research organization. This role is responsible for shaping the strategic scientific direction of PCR, advancing patient-focused drug development, and ensuring scientific excellence across direct-to-patient and observational research programs.

This position plays a pivotal role in integrating patient experience data into drug development strategies, clinical study design, regulatory submissions, HTA engagements, and post-launch evidence generation.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Scientific Leadership

  • Lead the development and execution of the PCR scientific strategy to reinforce the organization’s position as a global thought leader.

  • Design and monitor a comprehensive scientific roadmap including conference participation, publications, and industry contributions.

  • Conduct scientific horizon scanning to identify evolving policies, regulatory guidance, and patient-centered research trends.

  • Publish an annual scientific strategy statement aligned with PCR’s mission.

Organizational Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve on the PCR leadership team, partnering with the Delivery Lead, DCMA Lead, and Operations Lead.

  • Oversee senior scientific staff, including Senior Research Leaders, ED Scientists, and the PCR Academy team.

  • Coordinate PCR University training programs, mentoring, and scientific development initiatives.

  • Work cross-functionally across Thermo Fisher Scientific to support evidence generation strategy and scientific alignment.

Evidence Generation Strategy

  • Develop and maintain the PCR evidence generation strategy framework and delivery model.

  • Provide scientific oversight for development of evidence generation tools, methodologies, and training programs.

  • Collaborate with commercial teams to promote strategic evidence solutions to internal and external stakeholders.

Project Oversight & Scientific Excellence

  • Ensure all PCR projects maintain high scientific rigor and quality standards.

  • Support proposal development, project delivery, and scientific review processes.

  • Act as Senior Advisor or Principal Investigator (PI) on key PCR studies.

  • Lead science-focused updates, working groups, and organizational initiatives.

Industry Engagement & Reputation Building

  • Represent PCR in industry groups, regulatory forums, and strategic discussions.

  • Coordinate responses to regulatory guidance and scientific policy developments.

  • Strengthen the organization’s reputation through publications, scientific presence, and thought leadership activities.


Qualifications & Experience Required

Education

  • PhD with 10+ years of relevant experience, OR

  • Master’s degree with 15+ years of relevant experience, OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and extensive professional experience in health outcomes, patient-centered research, or a related field.

Experience Required

  • Significant recent consulting experience with internal and external clients.

  • Proven track record of scientific output, including peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, innovative, and collaborative research projects.

  • Strong business development and scientific networking capabilities.


Skills & Competencies

  • Expertise in patient-centered research, health outcomes, observational research, or related scientific domains.

  • Advanced proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; familiarity with SAS or similar analytical tools.

  • Ability to mentor and lead senior scientific teams.

  • Strong communication, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to work across multiple business units within a global organization.

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities.


Working Conditions

  • Fully remote position with standard Monday–Friday schedule.

  • Requires extended periods of working upright and stationary.

  • Ability to use standard office technology and software systems.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders.

  • Ability to perform under pressure while managing multiple assignments.

  • Occasional travel may be required.
