Role Overview

The Senior Director, Gene Therapy Medical Affairs will provide strategic and scientific leadership across Lilly’s gene therapy portfolio, including sensory disorders, rare diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions.
This leader will be the primary interface with key opinion leaders, treatment centers of excellence, and global experts, ensuring exceptional customer experiences and supporting gene therapy adoption.

The role requires identifying unmet medical needs, reducing diagnostic barriers, and developing comprehensive medical strategies, while collaborating internally with clinical, commercial, regulatory, legal, compliance, and other functions.


Key Responsibilities


1. Scientific & Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as the scientific expert for gene therapy and related therapeutic areas.

  • Stay updated on advances in genetics, rare diseases, and gene therapy science.

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to shape launch strategies and medical plans.


2. KOL & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with:

    • Key opinion leaders (KOLs)

    • External scientific experts

    • Patient advocacy leaders

  • Identify scientific trends, unmet needs, and external opportunities.

  • Provide accurate scientific and medical education to external stakeholders.


3. Gene Therapy Centers of Excellence Support

  • Provide scientific training and education to treatment center staff.

  • Help remove site-specific barriers to gene therapy administration.

  • Support center readiness and address medical/scientific challenges.


4. Field Insights

  • Collect, interpret, and communicate actionable clinical insights from the field.

  • Share insights to shape medical, commercial, and patient-focused strategies.


5. Education & Communication

  • Develop and review scientific content for internal and external presentations.

  • Educate healthcare professionals, patients, and families on genetic testing and gene therapy.

  • Contribute to medical education initiatives and internal knowledge building.


6. Clinical Support

  • Support clinical study teams by driving trial awareness.

  • Provide patient and healthcare professional insights to improve trial execution.


7. Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure strict compliance with all internal/external regulations.

  • Demonstrate sound judgment and ethical decision-making at all times.


Basic Qualifications

Education & Experience

One of the following:

Option 1:

  • PharmD or PhD in a medically or scientifically related field

  • 8+ years of relevant industry experience

Option 2:

  • Master’s degree in a medically/scientifically related field

  • 10+ years of industry experience in relevant therapeutic areas

Required Experience

  • Medical Affairs or Patient Advocacy experience

  • Background in genetics, gene therapy, or rare diseases


Additional Preferences

  • High learning agility, with the ability to absorb and communicate complex science.

  • Strong self-management and multitasking ability.

  • Advanced presentation and computer proficiency (including literature research).

  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven networking and relationship-building ability.

  • Experience handling complex scientific customer questions.

  • Field-based work experience is highly valued.

  • Ability to travel ~40%, including weekends and potential international travel.


Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range

$154,500 – $226,600
(Actual compensation depends on experience, skills, and location.)
