Senior Director, Clinical Data Management

Summary / Job Purpose

The Senior Director, Clinical Data Management (CDM) provides strategic and operational leadership for all Clinical Data Management activities across Phase I–IV studies. This role oversees internal teams, functional service providers (FSPs), and fully outsourced studies across global regions. The position requires a seasoned leader with a proven track record in organizational development, global team leadership, and excellence in CDM execution.

The Senior Director serves as a key decision-maker for long-term CDM strategy, workforce planning, performance management, and operational delivery. This role also represents CDM and Data & Statistical Sciences in senior leadership forums and cross-functional collaborations across R&D.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Functional Leadership

  • Lead CDM activities for assigned clinical programs utilizing internal, FSP, and outsourced resources across global regions.

  • Provide strategic direction to develop CDM capabilities, operating models, and organizational structures.

  • Partner with senior R&D, therapeutic area leaders, IT, Procurement, and other key stakeholders to ensure aligned priorities and high-quality CDM deliverables.

  • Influence CDM strategy, resourcing, and processes across the development portfolio.

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee CDM workload, resource allocation, and portfolio planning across therapeutic areas.

  • Ensure adherence to CDM standards, compliance requirements, and quality expectations.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, productivity, and innovation.

  • Lead CDM representation during regulatory submissions, inspections, and cross-functional reviews.

People Leadership & Talent Development

  • Directly and indirectly manage CDM professionals, including Director-level leaders.

  • Lead recruitment, training, coaching, and performance management for global CDM teams.

  • Foster a positive, transparent, and collaborative work environment aligned with company values.

  • Develop future leadership talent and strengthen organizational capability.

Cross-Functional Influence

  • Represent CDM in senior leadership discussions and act on behalf of the Head of CDM when needed.

  • Drive alignment between CDM, therapeutic areas, and other functional teams across R&D.

  • Lead or sponsor cross-functional initiatives that enhance service capabilities and operational delivery.


Education & Experience Requirements

Education

  • BS/BA in a related discipline with 15+ years of experience, or

  • MS/MA with 13+ years of experience, or

  • PhD with 12+ years of experience, or

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Certifications in relevant areas preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 17 years of relevant industry experience.

  • Strong background in the Biotech/Pharmaceutical sector required.

  • Experience with Oncology clinical trials preferred.

  • Proven leadership of global data management teams.

  • At least 10 years of line management experience.

  • Experience in regulatory submissions and inspections required.

  • Demonstrated success developing Director-level leaders.

  • Deep knowledge of GCP, ICH, CDISC standards, and risk-based data management.

Skills & Competencies

  • Expert-level understanding of CDM principles, processes, and best practices.

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to develop SOPs, work instructions, and training frameworks.

  • Skilled in leading large, complex programs and global team networks.

  • Strong communication and relationship-management capabilities across levels.

  • Demonstrated success managing CRO partnerships and outsourced models.

Compensation

Base Salary Range:
USD $226,500 – $321,000 annually
(Exact compensation depends on geographic region, experience, skills, and internal equity.)
