Role Overview

Merck is seeking a Product Owner for Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to drive product strategy, development, and delivery of key lab informatics solutions across the organization. This role partners closely with laboratory scientists, quality control (QC), IT developers, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure systems meet both scientific and regulatory requirements.

The Product Owner will manage product backlogs, roadmaps, sprints, and releases, serving as a strong advocate for scientists’ needs and ensuring that LIMS solutions accelerate research, improve lab operations, and support compliance in GMP/GLP environments.


Key Responsibilities

Product Ownership & Strategy

  • Own multiple LIMS products across Merck’s global operations.

  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps and backlogs, prioritizing features and enhancements based on stakeholder needs.

  • Define future strategy and vision for LIMS products to enhance laboratory efficiency and compliance.

  • Collaborate with the Product Technical Lead to plan sprints, deliver solutions, and manage release cycles.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with laboratory scientists, QC, and manufacturing teams to understand user needs.

  • Engage IT developers and system architects to translate requirements into technical solutions.

  • Communicate effectively across business and IT functions to align on priorities and expectations.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance and completeness of system documentation.

Risk & Change Management

  • Identify and manage escalations, risks, and dependencies.

  • Ensure solutions comply with GxP standards and data integrity principles (ALCOA+).

  • Lead development and change management initiatives in GMP/GLP-qualified lab environments.


Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree; M.S. in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, or Engineering preferred.

  • 2+ years working with laboratory scientists or QC/manufacturing labs, ideally supporting GMP/GLP Research and Development IT applications.

  • Experience managing product backlogs, writing user stories, prioritizing requirements, and release planning in Agile or hybrid Agile/Waterfall environments.

  • Technical literacy to engage with developers, vendors, and IT teams.

  • Strong analytical problem-solving and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

  • Excellent stakeholder communication and documentation skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with LIMS platforms (e.g., LabWare) configuration and management.

  • Knowledge of sample management, assay workflows, instrument integration, and lab informatics principles.

  • Proven success in product strategy for lab IT systems.
