Role Overview

The Pharmacy Technician – Prior Authorization & Benefits Support serves as the primary onsite liaison between the health system, clinic staff, and specialty pharmacy services. This role focuses on improving patient access to medication therapies by managing prior authorizations, benefits verification, and prescription routing while supporting physician offices and healthcare stakeholders.

This position also functions as a key representative of the pharmacy program, driving patient referrals and improving prescription capture rates through education, collaboration, and process optimization.


Work Details

  • Work Mode: On-site (Adventist Health Clinic, Yuba City, CA)

  • Additional Support: May assist other clinic sites remotely or in person as needed

  • Schedule: Full-time (may require extended hours based on business needs)


Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Access & Prescription Coordination

  • Serve as the primary contact for specialty pharmacy prescriptions

  • Ensure timely prescription fulfillment and patient access to medications

  • Navigate healthcare systems to improve patient outcomes

2. Prior Authorization & Benefits Verification

  • Perform insurance benefits verification

  • Manage prior authorization (PA) submissions and follow-ups

  • Work with centralized patient service teams to support approval processes

3. Clinic & Provider Engagement

  • Act as onsite liaison for physician clinics and healthcare staff

  • Build strong relationships with providers, nurses, and administrative teams

  • Educate clinic staff on preferred specialty pharmacy workflows

4. Referral & Prescription Capture Support

  • Promote use of preferred specialty pharmacy services

  • Influence physician and clinic staff through education and service excellence

  • Improve prescription capture rates through process support and engagement

5. Patient Services & Support

  • Address patient access issues and resolve pharmacy-related concerns

  • Ensure timely communication between patients, providers, and payers

  • Support improved medication adherence and therapy initiation

6. Business Development & Process Improvement

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to expand health system pharmacy services

  • Support marketing and outreach initiatives for pharmacy programs

  • Identify and implement workflow improvements in clinic settings

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records in EMR and pharmacy systems

  • Prepare reports and support service performance tracking

  • Provide updates to management and client stakeholders

8. Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide backup coverage for other sites or team members as needed

  • Deliver presentations and participate in educational meetings

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in one or more of the following:

    • Benefits verification

    • Prior authorization

    • Medical billing or coding

    • Medical office administration

    • Pharmacy or healthcare support roles

    • Patient financial services or social work

  • 2–4 year degree preferred (healthcare, business, or related field)

Certification Requirements

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or equivalent) required

  • OR Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or equivalent healthcare certification

  • State certification/license may also be required
