Pharmacy Technician - Job Overview

This full-time role ensures effective pharmacy operations by supporting pharmacists in preparing medications, managing patient records, and providing retail and ambulatory care services. Pharmacy Technicians work under direct pharmacist supervision and adhere to established protocols for delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical services.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties

  • Execute non-judgmental technical tasks under pharmacist supervision.
  • Prepare and dispense drug orders as per physician requests and established protocols.
  • Verify and maintain accurate computerized patient medication records.
  • Compound non-sterile pharmaceuticals and provide timely pharmacy services.
  • Issue controlled substances while maintaining regulatory records.
  • Ensure department activities are completed and recorded daily.
  • Maintain current technician licensure and complete all competency assessments.
  • Serve as a pharmacy technician in specialty areas, including operating rooms or decentralized pharmacy workstations.
  • Support ambulatory pharmaceutical care services like anticoagulation clinics, transition of care, and discharge medication reconciliation.
  • Perform outpatient distributive functions, including prescription order entry and medication dispensing for pick-up or delivery.

Clinical Duties

  • Ensure the safe and appropriate use of medications by adhering to policies and protocols.
  • Accurately interpret and extract information from patient medical records.
  • Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions promptly.
  • Coordinate and support pharmacist-led patient and family education.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, including data collection and documentation.

Occupational Hazards

  • Potential exposure to hazardous substances like chemotherapeutic agents and cleaning solutions.
  • Risks from handling sharp objects, musculoskeletal injuries, or biological materials during patient care activities.

Qualifications

Education & Skills

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under supervision.

Experience

  • Pharmacy experience preferred but not required.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Required: Registered Pharmacy Technician in the applicable state.
  • Preferred: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
