Job Overview

Abbott, a global healthcare leader operating in more than 160 countries, is seeking a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to join its Toxicology Business Unit within the Rapid Diagnostics – Workplace Solutions division in Kansas City, Missouri.

This role is critical to ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and medical integrity of workplace drug testing programs. The Medical Review Officer will apply clinical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and professional judgment to review, verify, and determine final drug test results for DOT, federal, and non-DOT clients. The position involves direct communication with donors, laboratories, pharmacies, and clients while upholding strict regulatory and quality standards.


Key Responsibilities

Medical Review & Compliance

  • Conduct comprehensive medical reviews of confirmed positive, invalid, or non-negative drug test results.

  • Apply clinical judgment to determine final test outcomes in compliance with DOT, HHS, FMCSA, and federal regulations.

  • Ensure strict adherence to Abbott Rapid Diagnostics quality policies, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Interview donors to identify legitimate medical explanations for laboratory findings.

  • Communicate professionally with laboratories, collection sites, pharmacies, and Workplace Solutions clients.

  • Act as a client-facing medical authority representing Abbott’s MRO leadership team.

Documentation & Regulatory Support

  • Review, approve, and sign medical and administrative documentation including prescription verifications, medical records, and error correction memoranda.

  • Maintain complete and audit-ready MRO records in accordance with federal and DOT requirements.

  • Provide consultative support to federal agency representatives regarding reviewed cases.

Quality, Governance & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in process improvement initiatives in collaboration with Workplace Operations Leadership.

  • Provide performance feedback to laboratories and collection sites when required.

  • Stay current with changes in DOT, HHS, federal, and state regulations impacting drug and alcohol testing.

  • Contribute to departmental goals, objectives, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.


Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).

  • Current Medical Review Officer certification (AAMRO or MRO Certification Council – MROCC).

  • Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States.

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience, preferably in occupational health or workplace medicine.
